Description Sequel to the original Dance of Balance from late 2006.

I like the whole "balance of opposites" idea. Many of us do. I've decided to pare down the concept; this time it's an even more basic Yin and Yang symbology - sun and moon, gold and silver, masculine and feminine - all that good stuff.

This thing is gonna be an absolute [explitive deleted] to color. I may have to go multi-media on it - like maybe puffy paint or something so's I get a bit of texture, but it's going to be mostly colored pencil over watercolor.

...Then the fun really begins. This dragon-knot is only one layer. Behind it will be a series of cut-paper Japanese design motifs, then behind that, the universe full of stars. Kinda like its cousin piece, Creating Balance , only without the fish and feathers.

I would love to see the out come of this. Your plans for it sound rally cool. Would you mind if I tried my hand at it too? I think it would be an interesting project for me to work on.

Finished it years ago, actually. [link]

You are welcome to tackle this; there are gobs of color combinations that would work beautifully with the design.

I was not sure if you had finished it since there was no link to the colored version.

Ach, good point. I don't always link up the pencilwork to the finished art piece. Oops.

Hah, I figured it out! You just like making my head hurt.

It should be beautiful when it's done.

Oh noooo... nononono, it's not YOUR head that I enjoy making hurt. At heart, I suspect that I'm just a wee bit of a masochist.

Wow! I adore the intricacy and graceful flow of this piece. It's gonna look amazing colored, even if it will be expletive deleted to do.

rachaelm5 In reply to DSil [2008-01-22 02:14:45 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! The intricacy was part of the challenge... I've not tried something this insidious before, and I'm actually a little stunned that I got it to work at all.

It has indeed been explitive-deleted to color, but I'm fairly pleased with it so far. I managed to keep the grace and flow (and comprehensibility, believe it or not) into the color stage, and I think it will draw together nicely once I tackle the cool colors next.

wow.. now that.. that is what i call detail! haha, i was NOT expecting this when i clicked the link.. it took me a minute to capture everything that was going on! this is AMAZING! i cant wait to see the final copy!

Thanks very much!

I know it's nigh-incomprehensible at this stage, but it will come together much better once I get the color in place. At this point I've done the color work on the bottom dragon and I *can*, for the most part, tell where he's going.

Thanks very much!

It's lost a bit of its yin-yanginess as it's gone along, but the underlying idea of dynamic opposites should still read clearly in the finale.

Wolvekit In reply to rachaelm5 [2008-01-22 17:22:51 +0000 UTC]

Then again, dynamic opposites that cannot exist without the other IS what yin and yang are all about, so it works out in the end.

It hurts my head and my fingers just thinking about it. How you have the patience to do that detail I'll never know! And it still retains such a perfect outer shape... ugh.

rachaelm5 In reply to phoenixsamurai [2008-01-22 02:28:52 +0000 UTC]

LOL - I have the patience to do this kind of crazy stuff by taking an entire day to go about it, with plenty of breaks in between sections. I also used a yin-yang symbol as the underlying "architecture" and I built the dragons into that structure. Honestly, it's all just tricks, a bit of planning, and a lot of elbow grease.

phoenixsamurai In reply to rachaelm5 [2008-01-22 16:58:30 +0000 UTC]

Too much elbow grease for me. If I can't finish a picture in one sitting, my patience gives out. Well, depending. Like... this one took forever, but it isn't as detailed as your stuff.

rachaelm5 In reply to phoenixsamurai [2008-02-01 02:02:20 +0000 UTC]

I do like to finish sections of my pictures in one sitting - I did all the linework in one sitting, then I colored the body scaling on the red dragon in one sitting, then the spines and belly... Like that. I think in sections and keep my wits together, even through these thirty-hour-long projects. It's taken me several years to get to the point where I could do that, though; I never could have done this kind of thing in college. When I was in college, I had to finish everything in one sitting, too - I lived for the weekends and would ususally art-binge for several classes all at once, where I used class time mostly for planning and sometimes for finishing touches.

I *did* get dizzy. I had to stop and rest quite a bit, and I also had to mark out the direction the dragon's bodies were going with little arrows so I wouldn't get lost!

That's crazy. I hope you didn't have to learn the arrow thing the hard way

This is amazing! May I ask what color scheme you have planned for this brilliant piece?

Thanks very much!

I'm using reds and golds for the bottom dragon (our "sun" motif) and blues and siilver for the top dragon (the "moon" motif).

Ya. This is going to be a tricky one, especially in keeping any definition to the serpent. The coils could easily get lost in the mass of color.

Give how you've spent hours upon hours doing stuff like this, I doubt you'll have much trouble. I can't wait to see what methods you choose to use.

That's the spirit! Keep on marching, I says! Keep on marching and we'll reach civilization soon enough, and we shall have wine and cheese, and all of our drawrings shall be complete!

...ooooookay. Time for bed. It's getting surreal in here.

rachaelm5 In reply to JadeThePredator [2008-01-17 01:38:34 +0000 UTC]

Believe me, this one actually took some effort to keep straight. I had to use little arrow markers to keep track of which direction the scales were supposed to go.

This kind of thing takes quite a bit of planning - and a lot of erasing as I jiggled the balance of coils around. Be assured that I will get this one finished - it's going to be a piece for an art contest my day-job company is a part of.

rachaelm5 In reply to LauraWolfeArt [2008-01-17 01:40:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh, it IS a tangly mess... LOL

I had to use arrows to keep track of what direction the bodies were going so I could lay the scales in right. Color will certainly clear this up - the silver and gold will be distinct enough that the different body shapes will pop right out.
