This is the latest lunchtime doodle. It actually kept me busy over about three weeks' worth of lunch hours.

Thank you. He needs some cleaning-up, but if you're working with traditional media for most of these, you should be able to color right over my scratchy shading.

Thanks very much. I'm hoping that I'll tickle the fancy of some colorists! Lord knows it's gonna be quite a while before I can get back to this guy.

I've always liked Celtic knots. You brought it into an illusion of 3D and made it dragon-kind. Very cool.

rachaelm5 In reply to Artdog53 [2009-05-25 07:12:35 +0000 UTC]

I've never been able to get my mind wrapped up in Celtic knotwork properly. I don't think in organized patterns very well - well, that, and I'm just lazy. I like the organic stuff with lots of variation, and occasionally I can make it work to the benefit of a drawing!

did you just do random lines, or do you know where each part of its body is?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to AceMaxim [2009-03-08 23:34:00 +0000 UTC]

I know where each body part is, for the most part. I plan everything along a central axis that winds through the whole dragon. Stuff gets concealed, naturally, but it was all there in the initial layout.

well good. nothing worse than a quantum physics dragon being in 6 different parts on 12 planes of existence

O_o

...I may have to figure out how to draw that...

let me know once you figure out what those 12 dimensions are. I hear they can be pretty tricky to understand with our limited intelligence

Actually, I suspect Rachel ALWAYS knows where her dragon parts are!

hehehe I always hope she does. It would be a travesty to see a dragon with a penis for a wing

A whole hour to myself, undisturbed... Are you kidding?! LOL... Love my lunchtime. It's good for making small drawings to fill in the time between the big, full-color projects. Thanks!

Gotta have my daily drawing break or I go crazy. And with all those computers, crazy can be troublesome at times...

triadenforcer [2009-02-26 11:29:57 +0000 UTC]

looks very jumbled up.....not exactly like a tattoo....but still unique because of all the detail

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to triadenforcer [2009-02-26 19:54:10 +0000 UTC]

I didn't plan this one with the linework I usually use in tattoo design, though it could still work out as such.

I really do like horribly tangly critters just lately... They're a delightful challenge - like reverse-engineering a jigsaw puzzle or something.

LOL - Yep. Mind you, it's an elaborate doodle, but it didn't have any planning or pre-sketching or anything. It just came out of the end of my pencil in phases like this.

suzaku18 In reply to rachaelm5 [2009-02-25 23:53:40 +0000 UTC]

Very elaborate doodle at that.

How come our best stuff comes out when we just wanted to doodle, instead of when we have it so planned?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to suzaku18 [2009-02-26 02:12:23 +0000 UTC]

I think some of the best stuff winds up in my sketchbook because I'm not consciously trying to work the design - I'm letting my instincts just play with an idea without paying much attention to the rules.

Absolutly love this by the way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to shiari [2009-02-25 03:10:02 +0000 UTC]

I keep it straight with the scales, actually. They all point in one direction, and I just follow them along the dragon's body. Before I have the scales laid in there, I just draw little arrows.

holy crap my eyes are crossing. Look at all the miniscule detail. I like detail but you take it to a whole new level. ^_~ You have more patience than I do. I really love how this one came out. Are you going to color this one? If you do can use greens/yellows/oranges. Well..unless of course you had something else in mind. I really love how his tail swirls around and twists. +Fave
