Description Illustration for Paul's HeroQuest handbook. This is one of the two remaining "setting" pictures. This is the magic shop/apothecary. I wanted this to look something like a window display, with a little of this and a little of that.

Pen and ink. Took about six hours to draw and four months to think up... I am NOT a fan of still life drawings on the whole.

LOL - Thanks! Still life drawings are difficult for me. I think I had to re-draw this picture a couple of times before I got all of the details correct.

Looks great finished! This one has a lot more contrast than the merchant's shop picture (though that one is very well done too), which really improves the picture.

Man, I just love the jar of eyeballs. So funny!

Thank you very much!

...I wonder about that omnipresent jar of eyeballs, though... We see them in magic shops quite often, but we never really know what wizards DO with a large jar of eyeballs. Eye of newt/tongue of dog and all that, but in those spells the witches are referring to plants. Shoot; maybe wizards just like large jars of eyeballs as a centerpiece on their study table.

Those are plants? Cool--I never knew that.

Good question! Though, if I were a wizard, I'd leave a jar of eyeballs in plain sight of any visitor just to creep them out (if nothing else).

Yeah, when I was doing research on Harry Potter, I ran across a couple of books that talked about all of the "spell components" that referred to animals' body parts. These were ususally, but not always, plants that kinda-sorta *looked* like body parts. The plants that looked like body parts (everything from rams' horns to the ever-present dog's tongue to baboon blood) were thought to be imbued with the qualities of the part they resembled. One had to gather them at a certain time of day in a certain season and dry them in such-and-such a way to enhance the magical potential of them. Fascinating stuff.

I absolutely hate doing still life drawings. Sure, I like to look at other's still life drawings, but no waaaayyyy, I don't wanna to 'em myself. It is awfully boring. Gah, bad luck... Guess what we have done on our art lessons every signle time? STILL LIFE. Sure, it is good in cases of learning to draw different things, tools and shapes etc. but otherwise it just....simply sucks ass.
That owl is really cool, though. What a cute little bird of night it is. You drew it's wings very well, if ya ask from me. The feathers are on the right places. You also manages to make the pages of the book look very natural and real.
The inking work is absolutely gorgeous too. It looks like you got a little lazy with the curtains though... They look slightly rushed.

All in all, another excellent piece of art by you. ^_^

I agree - I did rush the curtains. I also used a pen with a larger nib, because I had become tired of the drawing at that point. I thought that the rough texture *could* work, but yeah, in the end it looks a bit grungy. I don't think it kills the drawing... Not quite... But I also don't think I would have finished the drawing that week if I had put it aside.

And thank you! I'm just glad that I don't have to do any more of these things any time soon!

Nicely done, nicely drawn, nicely composed, as always, but like you said, still lives are never exiting. This does win points for the magical equiptment tho

Mucho Excellente! Ack, I'm rusty at Spanish, but awesome pen and ink work! I'm not a big fan of still life either (I tend to break out in hives when I have to do a still life.) That's when my patience wears thin and I become more of a raging lunatic. Glasswork in pen and ink tends to be a vitch, yet you did great May I have that jar of eyeballs?

...Yeah, hives just about sums it up for me, too. That's why I've hemmed and hawed about this infernal thing for the last four months. GAH! *shudders*

*lobs you a jar of eyeballs*

...Um... CATCH!

LOL - thank you very much. I have only one more "scene" planned right now. Since I don't particularly enjoy this kind of drawing, I don't do them unless somebody's making it worth my time and trouble.

It's still an amazing amount of detail, even if you aren't a fan of still lifes. I really like how you sucessfully managed/inked the glass jars. Lighting & reflections on glass are not easy to do, and you did a great job at it. I also like this drawing, and many of your ink drawings, because you *can* make out all of the artifcats and detail fairly easily. I think that demonstrates a sizable amount of skill to make objects easily identifiable w/ details.

Thanks. I still think I need more patience and better control - toward the end I started scribbling on the curtains. But the owl... Yeah, I like that part.
