Description

This was a commission from a customer =] The pentacle is a very well-known symbol (though to many it has a very negative reputation), dating back to over 8,000 years. Contrary to popular belief, it is not actually a symbol of evil at all. It is also known as the "Star of Life" and the symbol itself is found in nature! If you slice an apple in half, you can find a pentacle. I have even seen it in the rings of wood! It appears many times, in many types of flowers and fruits. The symbol has been adopted and used in various pagan traditions, and the five points have come to represent the elements: earth, air, fire, water, and Spirit. Nothing scary at all =]

I debated about whether or not to post this, since this symbol does have such a negative reputation to so many, but this is part of my art and one of the many things I am able to do as an artist =] Plus, I had a ton of fun making it because it's so new and different from what I normally do! So, enjoy everyone! =]

Very nice work, and I love how you incorporated the different colored stones to symbolize the elements at the tips.  Very nice job keeping the symmetry of the star while getting it to fit into a circle-mad skillz! hahaha  I can understand the negativity associated with it, but I was always under the impression the right side up one like you are holding is the nature/good one, and the people into negativity/satan bad things etc, you flip it upside down so the top point is upside down to represent the anti- of all the good things the pentacle represents.  Which leads to a funny story about a co-worker one time tried to draw me a star for good work, but could not for the life of her do it right unless she drew it upside down, and she got frustrated and circled it for me and was like HERE GOOD WORK! And I'm like...thanks for the Satan star hahhaha ANd she's like wha-OH NO WOOPS hahahhaa  So after that it became a joke to give everyone that did a good job an upside down pentacle.  Shame on us...but it was funny.

Thank you =]

I actually measured the wire this time to try to get the correct symmetry, haha, which I've never done before.

HAHA oh my goodness. I cannot believe that is a real story xD. But good for you guys - way to put a positive spin on a negative symbol rofl. I wonder what other people thought, if they saw that xD.

I think you might have air and earth swapped.

Do I? I didn't realize they had specific positions - I know that they correspond to north, south, east, west... in which case, all of them would be wrong since there are only four directions and yet five elements =]

Technically there is an elemental hierarchy where spirit is at the starting point, and then descending to the right the second most important would be fire, Then moving over to the upper left is air, then across the upper right is water, and finally the bottom left is earth. Assuming that the pendant is backwards just the earth and air is switched.

Oh, that's quite interesting =] I knew Spirit was at the top, but didn't know the others had positions too. I guess I'll know that for next time ^.^ Thanks!

No problem, a lot of people actually don't. I had to research it for a tattoo design.

Indeed nothing scary about it at all. I have gotten into some arguments before with people about pentacles and pentagrams and the different types of them. A lot of people don't differentiate between the two and lump them together even though the single point up one is a strong symbol of protection.

I don't know too much about the differences of them - this is the only one that I'm particularly familiar with.

There's two that I know about -single point up (like the one you made) and two points up (where the one point up star is flipped horizontally) on the star. The single point up is more common and a really strong protection symbol that dates back thousands of years like you said. The two points up is its inverse and opposite and the "evil" pentagram, as the symbol for demons and the devil (anyone who knows Black Butler will probably be able to recognize it there). I admit I am not quite too in depth familiar with the symbols, but I know that they are opposites of each other and people don't often realize that they are two different symbols and lump them together.

Ahh, yes - I guess I do know about the inverse one! Lots of good symbols are turned "inverse" for bad purposes, so I'm not sure why this one has such a bad reputation in comparison to the others! Hollywood movies, perhaps =]

It probably is all the Hollywood movies and medieval teachings of the Catholic church much like how the superstition that black cats are bad luck and witches' cats started. I honestly don't know how that started either since I have a sweet, wonderful, and loving black cat who has never brought bad luck to anyone as far as I know and loves to cuddle with me.

Actually I have heard that black cats are more intuitive than other cats, and more sensitive to energy and spirits, which is why witches kept them as familiars (of course, who knows how much truth there is to that lol and I don't even remember where I heard that xD). Which is how they got the stereotype of being bad because witches had them all the time >.< I personally love black cats. I hope to have one myself some day and name him Binx <3. Just like the cat in Hocus Pocus!

You can thank the Catholic church in particular, for the negative associations with pentacles and pentagrams. Way back in Europe when paganism was still quite strong, the church needed to find a way to put down paganism and get more followers. Thus, they took an ancient and harmless pagan symbol, flipped it over and said it was a sign of the devil. Many of the images and symbolism associated with Satan were simply ripped from paganism peddled as demonic to the unknowing masses. Throw in ignorance, and a few crazy people actually worshiping it as a symbol of Satan, and here we are.

As for black cats, it's about the same reason that black rats/crows/ravens are symbols of bad luck to many, and white colored animals are seen as pure. However cats in general were associated with witches and the like as many women or pagans kept cats around to take care of rodent problems. Mix that with a cat's general sassy, coy, and independent nature, and you've got the perfect familiar for a "devil-worshiping witch".

As for me, I have a precious, fluffy black baby who is quite needy for attention; even though she tries to hide it sometimes. Even with my mom and 2 brothers around, she'll get quite upset with me if I've stayed over at my boyfriend's place for a day or so!

Unfortunately, many different cultures have been destroyed in the name of religion. But I think it is safe to say that whether someone is a Christian or a pagan, there are good and bad people among both.

I was raised Christian, and even went to a Christian school. And while I do still carry some of that faith with me, I have also grown quite a bit spiritually within the last couple years (especially after having a child, and wanting to raise her to feel safe and unafraid to explore her own spirituality someday), and have come to believe that there is truth in all religions/belief systems - just none of them have the entirely complete picture. There is so much about our universe that is unknown, so I don't think anyone can say that they have all of the answers. I have always been drawn to Celtic things and pagan practices and beliefs, just simply because I find them beautiful and they speak to my soul. I am finally brave enough to go against the grain of what I've been brought up to believe was "evil" and explore those feelings, and have been so pleasantly inspired and excited by what I've been discovering about myself and the world. There is so much beautiful symbolism, and it has inspired a lot of my art, as well.

I don't normally like to share my personal beliefs on social media because I don't want to offend anyone, but I thought it was relevant to the conversation =]

As for kitties, I have three kitties who are also quite needy for attention! The one that picked me as her "person," will follow me around the house, and jump up on anything she can to lick me lol.

Nothing scary about a pentacle indeed, it has the reputation to be very protective and can be found in many traditions. Beautiful!
