Description Prosopagnosia is a condition where a person cannot recognize faces. While they still see others, they can’t place who the person is, even if it’s a loved one, or even a photograph of themselves. Many work around this, however, by instead paying attention to a person’s clothes, their hair color, or their voice and mannerisms. The condition is often caused by either brain damage or an underdeveloped part of the brain that is specifically tasked with recognizing faces.

Made in the interest of mental health, I chose to create a conceptual take on the matter, in the hopes of giving this condition visibility and of educating people.

You really are an amazing illustrator! Do you use thumbnails?

Absolutely.  I think for this one in particular I initially went through ten different thumbnails before narrowing it down to the four versions I was comfortable with turning into sketches and showing the higher ups.  In reality, I probably should have done more, but sometimes you've just got to work with the time constraints!

Wow that's so cool! So you're an actual illustrator? I had a feeling if you posted some of the thumbnails that would be really cool

Haha no one sees my thumbnails, they're so bad. For me, I just use them to get my thoughts out, or trying to get an idea for a different angle. I can guarantee 99.9% of the time no one can even tell what they are, they just look like scribbles.

Now, if I'm doing thumbnails that I know will need approval, I of course have to make them look better, almost to the stage of a basic sketch.  But thumbnails are a great way to figure out what you want to do with an image, definitely do a few before jumping into a drawing or painting.

Interesting. That does make sense thou. I've never tried using thumb nails before but I took an illustration class and the teacher talked about them. I saw your art and I was like, "these look very planned out". You truly have a knack for it :3

Are you writing a book about all of these diseases?

Nah, I was just doing them for a short series of paintings.  I'm not exactly an expert on any of them, and most of them I heard about through podcasts and then took a day or two for internet research.  Doing a book on uncommon mental disorders and conditions like these though would be a really interesting project.  I've always been pretty interested in the mental health field as well as art, so I'd absolutely love that.

Actually, I probably could do that, I don't know why I didn't think about that before. I know people in a couple different parts of the medical field who could help fact-check my work.  Plus, one of my old professors self published a picture book through crowdfunding. (it's called Animals from History by Christina Hess and it's really cute and I really admire all of her work.) So I could talk with her about how she went about doing that.

Huh.  I can do that.  I'm still pretty fresh out of college in the industry, so it still amazes me that I have options like that now haha.  I'll check on some of my other social media and see if I can get people interested in it.

Haha thanks, I think you just inadvertently gave me some inspiration.
