Also, I lol'd when I thought of HOW many different inverts and herps have the word 'elegans' as part of their scientific name,

It's because they're among the most beautiful animals~ makes me sad that more people don't recognize that =<

Oh wow, he's really pretty. I like the markings on him. The fact he stays small is nice too. I think I know what I may choose for the next tarantula I may get XP Very pretty, thank you for sharing.

He was also a bit pricey (~$90 pricetag though I got a discount) but I'd been squealing over and collecting photos of this species for ages, so my husband said it could be an early Christmas present

I was doing a look around via the species name and was finding them similar. they are really gorgeous. I've only ever raised Chilean Rose and right now I have a Versicolor. Been considering getting another burrower but it's something my husband and I have been butting heads with. Congrats on the new baby though. :3

I hear these guys are burrowers but stay visible and don't turn into pet holes I need to replace the pebbles in his cube with dirt and see if he goes for it.

So awsome!
What are you feeding him so far? And where there any females available form where you got him?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RacieB In reply to KremlinJill [2010-11-28 01:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Smallish crickets, he's pretty active and apparently the species are voracious eaters so I might give him a bit more.

I think he was the only elegans available, I'd been asking about them for a while and yesterday the manager showed me a few different Cyriocosmus they'd just ordered from their supplier (not sure what the other species were off the top of my head, I'd have to look them up. One that was all black except for the pacman, and one that looked like an elegans but with a large oval in place of the pacman.)

He might actually be female, too tiny to tell right now =x I'd already picked the name though and I'm sure he doesn't care what he's called >>;

Neat.
It is terribly hard to sex immature spiders, hopefully yours is female, as females tend to live longer.
Is yours able to be handled?

RacieB In reply to KremlinJill [2010-11-28 02:13:03 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, I haven't tried yet. He did some hair-kicking when I was trying to open his cube last night to feed him though XP

I try to avoid handling any of my T's just because I'm paranoid of their fragility, I used to hold Dogar (G. aureostriata) quite a bit when he was a sling but he's pretty fat now and I really don't want to risk it ._. Even if one managed to just scuttle away unharmed, there are a lot of cats around the house =/

I always like holding them at the store where it's safe for them though

How many T's do you own at present moment?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RacieB In reply to KremlinJill [2010-11-28 02:59:22 +0000 UTC]

Three G. aureostriata, two G. rosea, a B. albopilosum, a C. fasciatum, a Paraphysa species (I wanna say parvula but I'm not certain, it looks identical to the two P. parvula I used to have), A. avicularia, and a C. elegans.

I also have a Pseudouroctonus reddelli (the smaller scorp of that pair seems to have died, I don't know what happened to it. I asked about possible causes and was told it's a fragile species but ughhh ._.)

Sweet...A lot of hairy friends!
I've been reading up on T's and I hope to eventually get one.
How much does it cost to maintain one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RacieB In reply to KremlinJill [2010-11-28 06:04:16 +0000 UTC]

It costs me about $1.20 each week for all of their crickets, so like... their upkeep is literal pocket change

KremlinJill In reply to RacieB [2010-11-28 15:46:40 +0000 UTC]

Wow...and what was the cost of buying them and thier equiment?
(sorry for all the questions XD)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RacieB In reply to KremlinJill [2010-11-28 23:09:00 +0000 UTC]

(Don't worry, I love questions ) Cost of the spider really depends on the species and age, for example I got a fat grown-up rosehair for about $20 and a tiny baby one for $7. It depends on the supplier as well.. I think the highest I've seen where I buy them is midsized goliath birdeaters for around $130.

Equipment is generally pretty simple for most species, at least the terrestrial ones. I just use critter keepers to house them in with the appropriate amount of substrate (some burrow more than others), stuff to crawl on / hide under, and a bottle cap water dish.

Temperature and moisture requirements vary but they usually do well in room temperatures (mine that like it warmer are all placed on top of an external hard drive casing on my desk )

Some arboreal species prefer being in tanks taller than they are wide, I think those are fancier setups (but I don't keep any Poecilotheria so I'm not sure how to build one of those myself.)
