Description Behind the piece:
Mictecacihuatl - Goddess of the dead in Aztec mythology. According to some of the research I did, she is wife of Mictecacihuatl, who is symbolized by spiders, bats, owls, and the eleventh hour. They reside in the Mictlampa, the region of death (the northern compass direction).

I wanted to complete this in time for Halloween, in honor of my mother who passed away several years ago. Thus, this piece means a lot to me. It's how I view death.

There are seveal meanings behind this work. On the one level, this image warns that, while there is beauty in life all around us, there are also sources of Death hidden within it too, ready to strike.

The other message in this painting is a bit more 'positive' sounding. For instance, I relate the figure of death to my mother. Mictecacihuatl, after all, is an immortal Goddess. While she is surrounded by life and death, she is above the concepts of mortality. Similiarly, when my mother passed away, she went above all levels of mortal pain and sickness. Her body died, but her essence became immortalized.

Death is still terrifying to me and some of the things that I witnessed during my mother's descent are still nightmares to me. I forced myself to witness this act of 'death' though. I wanted to be there for my mother's death the same way she was there for my birth. They are two different processes, but both are intimately connected together. My mother may have died, but she became reborn as a spirit. Conversely, the moment I was born I now stand ready to die (either by old age, disease, who knows...).

So yeah, this piece is pretty complicated. And I know some people might get uncomfortable reading this commentary. But this is the root of what this piece signifies and why I wanted to complete it in time for Day of the Dead. This is a festival that recognizes how fragile life is and how Death can strike at any moment. And yet, it is also a celebration to those who have been reborn into immortal Gods and Goddes like Mictecacihuatl and Mictecacihuatl too.

Other commentary:
To get the expression right, I referred to my face. Mind you, this isn't a portrait, but I wanted to get a sense of expression so I posed in front of a mirror.

Lastly, some really extraordinary news. I've been invited to the Psychedelic Candy Circus here in San Antonio. This is a fundraiser event intended to raise money for a documentary film on San Antonio artists and the challenges/inspirations they faced from their neighborhoods. I'm really excited to attend this event! *_* It'll feature circus performers, flaming dancers, an assortment of awesome desserts, and, of course, major figures from San Antonio's art community. I've been personally asked to donate work to the silent auction. Proceeds will go directly to the film project. I'll be donating a fullsize print of this work at the event.

In the description you put, "she is wife of Mictecacihuatl" but I believe you meant to put Mictlantecuhtli.
Also I too have bought this print from you and I simply adore it!

I can't even begin to think how long this must have taken you! The details in this are absolutely marvellous. Such vivid, bright colours everywhere, and just the right amount of darkness to the shadows The swirls and beads in her hair really make this something beautifully surreal.
The comment made me think too.. Beautiful piece <3

I don't know how I could have passed this the first time around. Death is a very.... complicated topic. I love your description. I absolutely LOVE the idea of Mictecacihuatl. Life is a precious/beautiful thing and it can be taken away at anytime.

This piece is flawless.

Thank you for sharing this artwork and your story behind it. I have been getting a lot of snake imagery in my life lately as I go through a lot of transformation. I was looking for an image that portrayed that for me on DA. I was immediately drawn to yours. Visually it has the strong Goddess I was looking for as well as the Snake power but then after reading your comment it further solidified that this is it. Death can come in so many ways not just physically. Right now I'm experiencing a death of my old life by moving to a new country even if it's for a year. Anyway...thank you. This is beautiful, powerful and an honor to Mictecacihuatl.

Thank you for sharing this deeply personal piece.

i wasn't uncomfortable at all reading your commentary, it was more an opportunity to learn more about you and the way you view the world.

my relationship with death is an all to common one especially now a days, i fell into a deep depression and attempted suicide, and in contrast to your experience, my mother was there for me, she found me nearly dead in my room and managed to get me to hospital in time, and didn't often leave my side for the 2 months the hospital held me for Psychiatric observation.

Coming into such close proximity with death irrevocably changes the lives of those who experience it and those who witness it, and the people involved and if it doesn't break them, makes the infinitely.

After reading your commentary and hearing what you did for your mother to ease her passing, i have a far greater respect for you as an artist and a person and am proud to call you a friend, please know that my thoughts are with you and your family and that if i could leave flowers for her i would.

the painting is beautiful by the way, as always im in love with your understanding of color and your ability to make acid green work with every other color

AND IM IN AWE OF YOUR MAD TRADITIONAL SKILLZZZ!!! (the zzzz's means your cooler )

Peace and love

This is exquisite. Really, I can't take my eyes off it. I particularly enjoy looking at the snake. The colouring around its mouth makes it look so dangerously tantalizing! Gives me the shivers, hahah.

I appreciate the fact that you always share the "behind the scenes" of your artwork. The personal commentary on inner messages makes my connection to your pieces so much more special than the initial "oh, look, it's pretty!"

PS: Props for realizing that pink and green go so well together. Such a nice combo.

Beautiful image and story!
It's strange that death scares us as much as it does if you think about how inevitable it is.
I think life and death are actually just one eternal process. It can be difficult for us to see because of our perspective. It's like night and day, they seem separate on earth but if you lived in space you could the earth is just endlessly spinning around the sun.
Your image really captures this concept for me!
Nicely done!

Daaaaaaw, thanks for digging the pic. It makes me happy this work is being well-recieved, especially when I've given so much love and hard work to it. I'd like to make prints of this piece to sell at cons. Although, I'm unsure whether Day-of-the-Dead work will sell well at an anime con. O_o

This blows my miiiiind, man. Those colors are incredible, this is exactly why I love Day of the Dead-themed art so much. Also, I need to make a headpiece like that. And dude, you did every scale on that snake, and his fangs are an excellent purple. And that hair, man. And I really like that the eyes are half-closed. This picture is so crazy.

(Unrelated: dude I signed up for Anime Matsuri and Comicpalooza, if you wanna do them we can totally carpool again. When is your next con?)

Thank you! I'm extremely happy you found it impressive. As for what drove me to create this piece... mostly my mother and the idea of doing an art based on Day of the Dead. I also had the desire to show a dark theme through bright, rich colors. I grew up in a city (San Antonio) that thrives on festive colors and wanted that to reflect on my piece.
