A project of short comic strips meant to explore the missing interactions of Mako’s relationships with the other characters and help solidify and deepen his character development.

After not-quite-as-long as the wait between the first and second, here is the third comic in my Missing Mako series! If you don't know about The Missing Mako, please head on over to the first strip  to read about it in more detail. Also yes, I'm aware I'm kind of jumping all over the place chronologically, but that's why I have the little "time frame" notes at the top, for easy reference (: I just work on these as I'm inspired, I don't want to limit myself to the order they're supposed to go in, and plus, sometimes I get ideas for older events and I wouldn't want to miss out on those ;D

About this strip:
I don't know about you, but personally, I was kind of bothered by the gigantic leaps and jumps in Mako and Korra's relationship throughout the series, with seemingly no middle ground. They went from animosity to supposedly happy friends over the course of episode 2, then back to disliking each other and animosity in the beginning of episode 3. In episode 4 Mako treated her like a friend at the celebratory ball thrown in her honor, but the last thing we saw was him angry as he read the newspaper that showed her with Tarlokk's task force. Then right at the beginning of episode 5, they were super goody goody happy happy friends friends! (or at least getting along if not entirely happy on Korra's end lol) What?! When did that happen?! Why didn't they show it to us?! It was what we (or at least I) were looking for, and it would have been so satisfying to see, but instead they just gave us the extremes and forced us to fill in the blanks with our imagination. Sigh.

So, that's what I'm doing here. Of course, there's lots of potential little growing-together stories between the Fire Ferrets that can be imagined in that time that they were training between episodes 4 and 5, but with this strip, I just wanted to focus on the start of it, what I feel was the full turning point of their relationship, when they both decide to fully commit to being friends and trusting and relying on each other. Yea, it could be argued that it happened before, and there were definitely shifts in their dynamic earlier, but I think that they weren't fully there yet, at least not on Mako's part. The way I see it, in episode 2 Mako changed from reluctantly being her teammate, to actually accepting she was a good bender, then by the end of episode 3, he realized she was a good person. Because I mean, it was the Avatar. Staying out all night with him to help him find his brother. That's a big deal, at least to Mako, who's always had to care for himself and his brother by himself. But in episode 4, that damn episode 4, Korra betrays his trust a bit, going off with Tarlokk and supposedly being a bit of the selfish, attention-seeking icon who Mako probably expected her to be in the beginning.  So how did he go from feeling somewhat betrayed or played for a fool to trusting her again? Well that's where this strip comes in. Korra wasn't just goofing off, she was legitimately terrified, and although she can't bring herself to talk about it, just by showing that vulnerability to Mako, about how she truly is sorry, it lets Mako finally decide to fully trust her, choosing to believe the best in her instead of the worst, because that's what friends do and that's what they are now. Come on, he had finally let someone in and he so wanted to be wrong, he just needed a reason, anything to know that she actually was the caring girl she had shown him and not the irresponsible Avatar the newspapers showed, and this moment, I think, would be it.

Artist Blablah:
The toning is back! Hahaha whether or not it'll stay is still to be determined. I'm definitely stretching my knowledge of Manga Studio now, and it's helping to ease me into some sort of pattern. I've also been considering making the strips color instead, but I almost feel like that would be more trouble instead of less? Plus I like the effects I can make when it's in manga-style, and I'm not sure how well they would translate to something full-color. Hm...

I really like this concept! Back when the show was coming out, I wrote my own outtakes to bridge gaps with plausible scenes, particularly for Team Avatar's relationship-building. www.fanfiction.net/s/8049467/1…

Oh. My. God. I think I love you. I think this is just the medication I needed, hahahaha. It feels so good to explore and see other people playing around with ideas from Book 1, ah! I'm gonna be reading this for a while, lol. Would you mind if I took some of your short stories and adapted them into comics? It's possible I may have a desire to do that with some of these scenes, I can already tell they're fueling my Book 1 cravings, hahahaha.

Haha what do you mean? I've only got comic strips out so far, and this so happens to be the third one. The stories are mostly contained, though.

Oh never mind I thought this was part/episode 4, not after episode 4. My reading skills broke.

Cool insight. But you know Korra was refusing to join the taskforce until she was exploited to the tabloids. So basically she wasn't thinking about fame at all. So Korra wasn't trying betray Mako, and he was at the gala too, surely he should've noticed that his friend and teammate was in a vulnerable situation - he couldn't have been THAT sucked in by Asami (because seriously, in the beginning, she was a part of a thousand other beautiful rich girls who seems nice when first met, before it turns out she's a legitimate character). It'll always annoy me how certain aspects of the series turned out, and don't get me started on episode 7!

Matter of fact, please make a Missing Mako on that, because he can't just accuse Korra of being petty with jealousy and threaten an ultimatum for just doing her job. He didn't even provide a good apology, he was just sorry that he didn't believe her when we all know he had SO MUCH MORE to be sorry for. Whether or not Korra forgives him right away is up to you, but personally if a guy I like was quick to think I was doing something drastic because of a stupid love triangle, and then threatened to sever whatever ties we had without a second thought, I wouldn't be so forgiving of him - never mind trust him with my heart.

While I love LoK, the botches and forced scenarios are impossible to ignore. I'm just glad the pacing in book 3 was decent, otherwise I would've dropped the idea of watching book 4.

Hahaha I definitely have a lot of problems with episode 7 and other parts in the series as well. I think the main reason I haven't done one with episode 7 is lack of time, as well as lack of inspiration. I know Mako was totally fucked up to threaten their friendship like that, and in my headcanon he would never have done that, but unfortunately I don't know how else I would make him act, yet. So I'm just kind of ignoring it and pretending it never happened for now, hahaha.
But thanks for the opinion! ^^

It's been a while.

But in my opinion, after Asami stormed away, Mako would've asked Korra why she was accusing Hiroshi. Korra would tell him why, and Mako would insist that there could've been a better approach than barging in, which Korra would defend that it was Lin's idea and she had no control. Mako, in turn, would consider it a possibility, since it would make sense for Hiroshi to sponsor as an attempt to get close to the Avatar, but at the same time he'll be conflicted because that would mean he had been caught in deception, ergo endangering himself and Bolin. While evidence didn't come up right away, Mako wouldn't take that as a clear, since he's aware that Hiroshi is an intelligent man. And whatever comes after is up for debate.

That's cool! Raeistic...Are you also going to make one for episode 5? If that is okay with you? Thanks!

Haha maybe! I definitely have a lot of little ideas for that period of time between episodes 4 and 5, mainly just little bonding moments. But as far as exactly episode 5, was there anything you were referring to specifically?

I haven't watched any of Korra in quite a while, so I'm not sure how to properly speak my position on this plot idea.  But, I do get the main idea from what you explained in the description.

Nice drawing and comp anyway.  Also, thank you for not putting yourself down this time.

I like your idea for the missing plot beat, and I think the comic illustrates it, but I feel like Bolin being quiet in the background seems a bit out of character for him. It would have made the comic more complex, but I can see him stepping in to play peacemaker, and maybe interpreting Korra's genuine regret for Mako.

Ohh, you're so right, ugh, hahaha. At one point I was like "Maybe I should get Bolin a little bit more involved..." but I couldn't think of how. That idea toss would have been useful. Alright, I'm getting you to once-over the next one xD
