Description

And here we meet Athena's younger (and handsomer) brother, Ares.

To some, the difference between Athena and Ares is out of place. This is fundamentally born out of the differences in the two main combat AI projects carried out by the British multinational defence company PUE Systems.

The EIP-1 project was the one that got the majority of the press, being a far greater departure from convention. "Athena" was based on a cutting-edge chassis, a money-no-object showcase prototype that demonstrated the best of what PUE could achieve - creating a super-soldier primarily as a publicity stunt.

The EIP-2 project that followed was instead developed based on an upgraded version of PUE's next generation of combat drone chassis. This was much more inline with conventional combat AI design, as the few high grade designs (such as Athena) that had been produced had largely proved that these extremely powerful AIs were cost-inefficient; while they were superlative shock assault troopers, this was a very niche role and also represented a high risk strategy in which the AI could potentially be disabled by a sufficiently powerful IED or anti-tank weapon. A less powerful AI chassis with an equivalent cost of drones was able to functionally be in more places at once, and was less required to put themselves at risk (potentially compromising the drone network they were overseeing - itself usually the key role of an AI in a combat situation).

Ultimately, the Ares project was the more successful as a military design, but the positive publicity around Athena's project was not to be dismissed.

As for their difference in appearance, AIs do have the capacity to switch chassis, but it's a complicated procedure (mostly for legal reasons, as far as identifying and tracking what counts as the person). While Ares does have a friendlier chassis he can use, he doesn't tend to swap to it that often (particularly as he's still more actively involved in the Army than Athena).

Fracturing Veil

It is 2018.

The United Kingdom is still arguing over Brexit, Angela Merkel has been sworn in for her fourth term as German chancellor, and a disillusioned AI super-soldier is failing to live a normal life.

After witnessing vampires attack a police officer she'd only just met, the pair are thrown into a world hidden from mortal eyes. Recruited by "Cerberus", they find themselves working alongside a sarcastic half-dragon, a distant arachne sorceress, and other paranormal denizens in order to try to maintain a 500-year ceasefire.

This is the Fracturing Veil.
