Description I've been a huge fan of the Hudson River School painters from the 19th century for a while now. The Detroit Institute of Arts near where I live has a number of Frederic Edwin Church paintings and they're simply incredible.

That said, I wanted to do a study of an Albert Bierstadt painting, another Hudson River School landscape painter. The painting is of the Morteratsch Glacier, you can see the original here . Be sure to check out his other work too, he's insane.

I did the study from scratch with no color picking or drawing, just shapes and color with a few different brushes. Next time I decide to do one, I might Livestream it

Hope you like it!

A little dark. I like the rythm, the colors and the feeling of oils. Goes in to my favorite collection.

Excellent work. I've favorited a couple of your pieces, but I like this one especially. You've given the piece more depth, sort of "drawing in" the person observing it. As well, and likely because it is a study, you've given the mountains a more whimsical feel, which I personally like. They sort of "float" into the clouds. I have to say, well. done.

I was so upset at my last visit, they were remodeling and I couldn't find ONE of his paintings. I need to get back up there and reorient myself, lol.

Got to say a big thanks to you for posting this study, you introduced me to the world of the Hudson River Painters and it is just mind bending how beautiful and awe-inspiring their paintings are.
I just got a huge book filled with their paintings which I think is really going to help me take my own environment paintings to the next level.
Take care, dude and much bro-love!

Of course, the composition is fantastic but you really figured out a great light in the cliffs and in the sky. I definitely love the texture of trees too!
Excellent work. How long did it take?

And I must thank you for giving me Bierstadt's name - I saw a gorgeous (print of a) painting once years ago but didn't get the artist's name, and now looking through Bierstadt's work I have found it! It is one of my favourite paintings and I hadn't been able to find it anywhere. Thanks!

Oh wow, his work is incredible.
I have similar feelings towards Northern California painters. There's a painting of Yosemite park in the Oakland Museum that leaves me absolutely in awe- it's a huge canvas, easily seven feet across and painstakingly detailed on every square inch. I've started working with a large-scale canvas in one of my classes, and even just slapping on paint to cover up space takes forever. The labor that goes into the numerous tiny brushstrokes is boggling. And Bierstadt's "Last of the Buffalo" is 6 by 10 feet, holy crap! (And to paint outdoor scenes in the 1800's without convenient/cheap photography, contending with changing light conditions and weather...just amazing).
