Description Another image for Molten Monkey International on their new S.K.O. toy line. This guy unfortunately doesn't quite have a name anymore due to some copyright issues, so I'm gonna call him Samuel L. Fishburne.... My client will probably swoop in and correct me with his actual new name, rofl.

Anyway, I worked on this image on and off for quite some time. I tried a whole new process and approach, and I'm pretty happy with it. The matting and background painting took forever, and by the time I was done with it, I hardly wanted to do the guy, haha. Anyway, hope you like it, more soon!

Also, check out *7377 s page, he's the creator of the toy line, awesome guy and great friend.

Nice! But, one question. Why does he have his light on in that time of day, and lighting as such around him?

Nice picture wading through the jungle has a certain... Romance behind it. If that makes any sense.

This type of setting would be great for a Tarzan piece. Great job on the video review of the Cintiq 24 hd you convienced me to make the switch from traditional to digital.

Self taught? wow, that's amazing. Yah i was about to pick up some of Dusso's stuff too haha. Ballistic publishing? i'll check those out as well. Appreciate the advice, you're very good at what you do...probably one of the best artists i've seen on here. I presume you work in the gaming industry?

Thanks I actually haven't worked on any games at an official capacity yet. I did some internal key art for Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, but that doesn't really count.

You're still pretty young, so i'm sure you'll be able to find work in whatever field you'd like. Don't undersell your work in Furious 4, haha. Keep up the good work, i'd like to see more great art from you!

Haha, I literally had almost nothing to do with it, and the work I did will never see the light of day.

hell big fan of this piece! was the background done with the help of some plates...matte painting style?

Rahll In reply to Shabbs [2012-01-06 00:54:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, glad you like it! The background did have a heavy amount of matte painting involved.

Okay awesome! That's what i figured, you're very good at matte painting. Mind telling me where you learned how to do it? I myself have been trying to learn matte painting and environment artwork and have been using tutorials from likes of dylan cole, i think that's a good start..what is your opinion of him? Sorry i just appreciate your input because you create some truly awesome environments.

Thanks! I'm actually self taught in regards to matte painting. I do have some resources I glance at from time to time, but for the most part I went about figuring out the methods my own way and refining my technique by picking up little tips and tricks from videos or asking a question from time to time.

Dylan Cole is a great resource, so is Dusso if you check out his matte painting DVDs through Gnomon as well. There's also a couple of matte painting books through Ballistic Publishing that might help you out.

Overall I love the composition in this piece. I just had a few small bones to pick with some shapes on the gun (As it is part of the main focus of the foreground character.)

There are two main "cylindrical" issues with the mounted pieces on the gun. The flashlight being the foremost, because of it's light it immediately catches your eye. Even though it is mounted on the side of the gun the shape of the lens would still resemble that of the scope (which looks correct and awsome) on the top. This is a vanishing point problem and I struggle with the same thing. second the gun barrel, almost appears to be situated on the lower left side of the gun (seeming more like an attachment than something issuing from the overall assembly.) at this angle I wouldn't imagine you would be able to see quite so much of the interior of the actual barrel at the tip.

the only other thing I would point out is the interaction between his legs and where they meet the water. a couple ripples or something indicating that he had recently displaced the water would go a long way.

Awesome painting overall, love the background details and the lighting.
