I did this painting as frontcover illustration for SHADOW GALLERY's album "Room V" (check out this fantastic band at www.shadowgallery.com).
The album and it's story is a sequel to their CD "Tyranny" (I also did that artwork). The main idea was to have this medical symbol with two aggressive snakes winding around the pole and morphing into the DNA double helix.
I thought it would look perfect to have a flaming roman "V" around this imageโฆ and I was quite happy with the result. It came out as fiery as I wanted it.

Alright... so I'm starting to realize you actually are a renown metal cover artist.
And you made the Tyranny cover as well...? So maybe you could clear something up for me: I always figured that the serpents were an artwork theme, as they embodied the "new world order" aspect of the albums. I even thought that having 2 snakes here (vs. 1 on Tyranny) was suggesting the union of opposites, in the sense of a reconciliation or an enlightenment (kind of the idea conveyed by the caduceus). But it's not so, is it? No, it's got to have a medical meaning to it, as pointed out by the lyrics.

on "Tyranny" I had the idea to symbolize the corruption in the world (= New World Order) by a dollar sign, formed by a snake and a sword = falseness + war...
for "Room V" Carl C-J had the idea to pick up this symbolism and to have 2 snakes forming a double helix = DNA... I came up with the idea of a burning halo around it, forming a V (= roman 5)...ย so we had the image^^

"$", it seems obvious now that you point it out. I never thought of it that way before, though; I was only seeing the symbol behind the snake and sword. Might just be because I'm European.
Thanks for that intel, I'm always curious about an artwork's background. Especially when it's the illustration of a musical masterpiece.
