I don't think you made a typo. I'm not sure they understand the differences between alleles and genes. They seem to think that black, red and cream are one gene with lots of alleles, instead of 3 genes (with 3, 2, and 2 alleles) that interact to create the main colouration. So, I think it's just a misunderstanding or oversimplification. I remember being taught that colours were controlled by a single gene in high school, this was later revealed to be a lot more complicated. For example, albinism (which Feh-ji-no brought up) is considered a genetic disease and is a result of pigment not being produced, however it is generally recorded on colour sheets for animals that it is common in or if it is related to extreme health effects (like death). Most species have more than one mutation that can result in albinism and they tend to be recessive but it's possible for it to be dominant.
