Description I hope this is understandable at least for people who know a bit about Mendel Genetics.

I made colour genes for my dragons once again... I might still change or add to them, but for now I'm happy with them. Not all the dragons from the adoptables fit into this system, but some might. If you're not sure, you can ask me

As an example, this [link] dragon's genome is "b2b2 AA Rr cc Tt ee FF D1d ss"
this [link] dragon's genome is "b2b2 Aa rr cc tt ee FF dd ss"

Here's the deal: the first one to send a full genome to me (either as a comment or a note) gets that dragon drawn by me
EDIT: won this round ([link] )
but you can still submit genomes, and I'll make you a miniature like the ones above so you can see how it turns out!

sure, i'd love to hear it, even if i don't know when i'll find the time to make you a miniature (been out of the country for a while, lots to catch up)

Should I send the genome by note?

or post it here, whatever you feel like

who knew you could fall in love with genes^^
maybe you can breed one like this when you get a dragon

What are genes? I never really knew what they where.

RainFreckles In reply to BlueStrike2434 [2012-12-09 00:04:53 +0000 UTC]

you don't really need to worry about that, it just means that if you breed with the dragon, there is a limited number of ways the offspring can look like, but i will sort it out and show you what they look like anyway

I think this is neat and you have done a good job. I have a fair amount of genetics background and I can tell you, you are using those numbered recessives (b1 b2) properly. I have seen it for real genes that have more than 2 alleles before so you're doing just fine. I'm not sure quite what Feh-ji-no means, but that might be due to a difference in education level... they tend to leave a lot out until you get fairly specialized courses and some people simplify some topics so much that they are technically wrong (and you get to learn it all over again later).
But back on the original topic, this is set up like some of the breed colouration genetic sheets I have seen.

RainFreckles In reply to Lady-Tempest [2012-09-21 09:29:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, that means a lot to me I'm always learning, that's why I guess sooner or later I'll have to change some of it again I don't know what Feh-ji-no means either, did I make a typo?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lady-Tempest In reply to RainFreckles [2012-09-21 18:06:52 +0000 UTC]

I don't think you made a typo. I'm not sure they understand the differences between alleles and genes. They seem to think that black, red and cream are one gene with lots of alleles, instead of 3 genes (with 3, 2, and 2 alleles) that interact to create the main colouration. So, I think it's just a misunderstanding or oversimplification. I remember being taught that colours were controlled by a single gene in high school, this was later revealed to be a lot more complicated. For example, albinism (which Feh-ji-no brought up) is considered a genetic disease and is a result of pigment not being produced, however it is generally recorded on colour sheets for animals that it is common in or if it is related to extreme health effects (like death). Most species have more than one mutation that can result in albinism and they tend to be recessive but it's possible for it to be dominant.

RainFreckles In reply to Lady-Tempest [2012-09-21 20:35:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh sorry, I didn't get straight away that Feh-ji-no was the username, sorry^^
Yeah I mean obviously I'm not going for maximum realism here, I don't know if creme colour and albinism are caused by the same gene in any animal, but it felt right enough, and anyway, these dragons have six fucking limbs

Wow! This is cool!
I'd have to research a bit more before I understand all of this (has never ever studied genetics...), or I'd be tempted to try this out.
I might try later if that's alright, Altair needs a friend.

RainFreckles In reply to TalonV [2012-09-21 10:32:40 +0000 UTC]

Altair is compatible with this by the way, his code is "b1b1 aa RR cc tt ee FF D4d ss"

Ah, okay. I'll have to give it a try then! (If you don't mind, that is. )

Let's see...umm... 'b1b2 AA RR cc TT ee FF dd Ss'....I think...
Oh, and this would be a female.

TalonV In reply to RainFreckles [2012-09-24 19:01:20 +0000 UTC]

Ooh! She's purdy! I love her lack of horns!

A question; are these just designs, or do these dragons actually 'exist'?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RainFreckles In reply to TalonV [2012-09-24 19:41:49 +0000 UTC]

they are designs, but I always think they come to life and get a more individual character once they are drawn... so I guess they exist now. I kind of know what you mean but it's a hard question to answer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TalonV In reply to RainFreckles [2012-09-25 10:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Glad you understood my question....I wasn't sure if I did at first. XD

I may have to draw some fan art of her.

RainFreckles In reply to TalonV [2012-09-25 11:33:08 +0000 UTC]

you may have to introduce Altair to her

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TalonV In reply to RainFreckles [2012-09-25 22:06:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes! I may indeed!

Ah, I just thought of something! Would you consider thinking about breeding dragons, maybe with a chance to have one of the offspring? I'd love to one day see what Altair and her (I gotta think of a nice name...how does 'Mae' sound to you?) kids look like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RainFreckles In reply to TalonV [2012-09-25 22:19:00 +0000 UTC]

Mae sounds very lovely and fitting to me, but I don't want to nail you down on it

I have actually thought about breeding a lot, but I don't know how I'd pull it off yet, so it may take a while, especially since I have to establish a few things about the reproduction first. But I'll figure something out

TalonV In reply to RainFreckles [2012-09-25 23:23:47 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty then, Mae it is, if you so agree.

Okay. Let me know when you do. And if you need any help, let me know. I don't know if I can be of much help, but I'll do my best.

I gotta get around to figuring out some similar stuff for a dragon species I've made. XD

Hmm, if you've time on your hands perhaps this gene sequence? b1b1AarrccEef1f1ddss

Zirra--Nova In reply to RainFreckles [2012-09-21 12:36:29 +0000 UTC]

Either way it will be a fairly long while before I get around to it, mostly because I have a lot of things to figure out for it.(Also, I'm notoriously lazy about redrawing the same thing over & over, even when I can use copy+paste to make it less tedious. -rolls-)

[Answering your other reply here too.]
Yay!
...
Wait...I think I skipped one of the genes.
Yup. I skipped gene 5. Oops. I guess that one is up to you if you doodle this dragon.
