The abridged history is this: The Proto-Filipino kingdoms was much more advanced at the time of Spanish contact, the Lakans of Tondo merged with Bruneian sultans through wedlock, the Tondo conspiracy was successful, shenanigans ensue, Hispanized Tondo kingdom and Co. became Brit protectorates but didn't speak English more often, Spanish rule was restricted to Ilocos, Zamboanga and Visayas, the Katipunan was a Republican-Pan Filipino organization rather than just being independence revolutionaries, there are three republics declared in the Republican Revolutions (Zamboanga, Negros and Tagalog), war ensues, all independent (read: non-Spanish) polities post-revolution convene in Malolos, and the United Republic is born, a fuckfest that organized itself on the course of a hundred years. Today, the URP is a semi-presidential federation where Baybayin is an official script, Bathala and Laon is actually Allah because muh syncretism, you can tell a building is "native revivalist" because it has tall roofs, lambanog is the official drink and Chavacano is widespread.
