Description
After two days, the young warrior woke up. Slightly dizzy, the warrior wakes up and looks around, seeing a small bedroom around him. It was mostly empty, with a longsword standing by his bed, walls made of stone and both the ceiling and floor of wood. The design seemed unknown to the warrior.
Soon, the warrior notices noise coming from the closed window nearby. Light comes from the small holes in the shutters of the window. The warrior opens the shutters slowly and looks up through the window, gasps in amazement - the jewel of the Nortander, Mulandir.
Below, a busy street, full of commoners, humans, dwarves, elves and even occasional dark elf and orc. Every now and then, a troll slaves comes around, carrying something... or someone. A beauty of its own to behold - the Circle did manage to bring order and friendship to peoples of Nortander... or so it would seem now, as the Warrior knew of the plotting and secret agreements done by both the five royal houses and the Circle.
A knock on the door. "Come in.", the warrior said, and a red armored man comes in, a human, with strange yellow eyes. "Hello, young one. Finally awake? I am Zorak, lieutenant of the Uram's Red Legion."
"I'm...", the warrior tried to answer, but lieutenant Zorak stopped him in middle of it, quickly saying with a strong and impatient voice, "I do not care who you are or where you are from. I am here to inform you to be ready for departure in thirty minutes. And as you know...", lieutenant coughs, "... disobeyng orders will bring you pain, as to any rune warrior."
"What?! Rune warrior?! I'm not...!", the warrior questioningly states with a panicked and fearful voice, again being interrupted by the lieutenant. "Yes. It is the only reason you survived. You may thank your new master, Uram the Red. Now, get ready. A rebellious village awaits the punishment of the Iskander royal house. Soon.", the lieutenant explains to the warrior and ordering him with an aggressive voice before leaving through the door.
The warrior thought with disgust and disdain, "But... I don't want to serve that damned mage. Never...", but sudden pain within the chest stopped that train of thought. "So... so... it's true...", the warrior quietly said with a sad tone. The warrior found the equipment within the nearby closet, red armor and a longsword. Soon, the warrior was quite ready. Perhaps some day the warrior could find a way to freedom once again.
Outside, several Red Legion soldiers, including the lieutenant, stood at attention. The warrior hurriedly rushed to the end of the line to stand at attention as well. "Come here, young one. We. -We- will lead these men to battle.", lieutenant orders, nodding at our warrior. The warrior nods, and walks up to the lieutenant. "These ten men, five recruits and five crossbowmen, are normal soldiers - not rune soldiers like us. We must treat them carefully, like children.". The warrior nods at lieutenant after lieutenant explains it.
"Good. Follow me, then.", lieutenant nods and orders the small unit forward. As they walk down the streets of Mulandir, the warrior is amazed and curious. Towers, beautiful buildings, wizards, so many different people of various races. However, soon, they go through the gates of the city walls. There, they see the ugly side of the city. Cottages, poor people, various magical creatures and even bones of demons.
After about two hours, they at last arrived. It was a small sized village, with approximately fifty or sixty inhabitants, women and children included. It is a farming village, it appears, and the farmers stared at them in fear as the Red Legion unit of twelve men arrived. "I seek the village elder. And I want everyone in the village square at once, too.", lieutenant orders the villagers.
Everyone or almost everyone gathers in the center of the village, and an old man steps up to the lieutenant, "I'm the elder, sir. How can we assist you today?", the old man, apparently the elder, asks the lieutenant kindly, fear present in his voice.
"I've heard you haven't been paying your dues for the past six months.", the lieutenant answers and asks the elder, "Why?".
"Because...", the elder answers, quietly at first, "... we do not want to pay your tyrannical royal house. We need food too. We need it. Your royal house demands more than we can produce ourselves!", the elders voice becomes louder and louder, "Tell your damned royal house and your Circle mage we will not pay anymore taxes until they lower them to something acceptable!". The elder turns around and takes a few steps towards the center of the village, towards his villagers.
"I see.", the lieutenant says, not surprised at all. "Men, burn the village to the ground. Leave none alive.", he orders the unit. The people of the village start screaming as the swordsmen charge at them, and crossbowmen shoot their bolts at the panicking civilians. Our warrior, at first surprised in a negative way, stares at what happens, but pain takes over and the warrior partakes in the slaughter.
Our warrior, although unwillingly, killed a family, a young man, his wife and their young child. Tears flew down the warriors face as the warrior watched the village burn. After the act, the warrior asked the lieutenant, still enraged by what they were just forced to do, "Why... why did we just kill all of them? You bastard.". The lieutenant calmly answers, "It is what we must do. Our master orders us to - and we must obey.", he answers, with clear disappointment in the voice, "It is the reality of our kind... We do their dirty work."
