Some people treat DeviantArt as a dump site for their snapshots of themselves, their family, their party times with zero attempt at creativity. The only watchers/watchees they have are people like them with similar photo dumps.That's not art. That's attention whoring. Take it to Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, or any of the dozens of sites devoted to social networking if you don't respect this place.
dA was created by artists for artists as a mechanism for appreciation, networking, sharing, and education... using it as Flickr or Facebook is an abuse of this website and a waste of everyone's time.
My message is not "keep away unless you're an artist." Rather, GIVE ART A TRY. At least pretend you respect this wonderful free service and its unique existence.
Not an artist? Bullshit. Make an effort. Write your first poem. Take a picture of something other than your bewbs or drunken pals. Play with Photoshop filters. Go nuts and favorite a few gigabytes of awesomeness from the dA firehose of galleries.
Or go back to Facebook, if they'll have you.

Oh god, I agree so much. Ran into some pictures of vacation, duck faces and boobs and I was like....what has DeviantArt become. I wish we could report such deviation and remove this shit. Otherwise it will grow like a tumor and DeviantArt will end up being a website for the first attention whore around.
Posting artworks, drawings, etc and then post a picture of yourself to say hi to your watchers, ok. But 1564586 pictures of you doing a duck face? Come on.

I completely agree with you. I'm new on deviantart but follow him for a long time and I must say it annoys me the way people something called art. I do not understand why some people are open profile and do not have any deviation than just looking for friends. To do this, there are other sites. I have nothing against a having friends but here in the first place should be an art.

When I see selfies, I look for the deviant id label, Usually that's the case. Yet I have seen plenty of selfies and retarded duck faces labeled and tried to be past off as art.

I think uploading a million holiday photos per week is art simply because it is a deep and insightful statement about art itself.

Taking shitty photos about themselves with a phone in front of the mirror and upload them to dA is more like spam to me... I saw it too many times, and these users don't even have one picture which isn't about them. Like a bunch of pictures with the same faces taken by webcam. It's really doesn't artistic... I will use this stamp. u.u

I also see many people who only take pictures of themselves and they upload here. One or two photos of you is a bit fine, as long as you upload art, but some people just have photos of him and his friends on a party and no submiting art! If they have come to dA to upload photos, best go to Facebook or Tuenti or Myspace or other, but not dA, dA is for art and photos, but not of yourself and friends drunkards

I completely agree with you, facebook is just about keeping in touch with the people that you don't normally get to see every now and then. DA is more about sharing your creativity with the rest of the world. I can understand if someone took a photo of a person, if it was for an artistic purpose like someone standing under a street light, but not if it's just posing in front of a mirror!

I like this place because it's easy to use and has a decent purpose, unlike facebook. Facebook is mainly just chatting about all the random crap in your life that no one really cares about, like that you found a tiny prize in your cereal box or you just went to the bathroom.
Also, it seems like community here is a lot better than facebook's is, at least from my experiences. I really don't see the big deal about facebook. dA is waaaay better and people should treat it that way.
