This was one of my favourite paintings from 2013, not only because I got to paint an Owlbear, but also because I felt the elements came together as I had planned, part of which was the maturing of my process of painting in oils. Oh, and I did I mention, I got to paint an Owlbear.

Very dynamic and colorful, and of course your trademark attention to detail - awesome. Do you like painting in oil better than acrylics? Do you find it easier?

How do you prime illustration board? And what type do you use, what manufacturer? Because that is why I prefer plywood as my illustration boards buckle and warp when primed, alas, Poland is not very rich in good art supplies -_- But I do like the smoothness of illustration board so I hpe you can guide me.
And this is excellent illustration

I use Swarthmore wet media illustration board then prime with clear acrylic gesso.

Thanks. I used their mixed media boards and of course dry media ones but never got good results when priming. Will try that for sure.

Being a rather tall, hairy guy who sometimes wears a hat with an owl's face on it (because it's cozy, and it's neat) there is a special place in my heart for owlbears. And this one's one of the nicest I've ever seen.

So, if the choice of the Owlbear based on the fact its the bastard child of a bear and owl?

Awesome!  Great Owlbear, he looks very spirited.    Just out of curiosity (sorry if someone already asked), how long does it take you to paint something like this?  Your action arrangements are always very dynamic, by the way, I always enjoy them!

In the future, can you please upload also a small detail shot or two? I'm very much interested in some of those wonderful brush strokes.

It might sound like an odd thing to say, but I think this is one of the best forests you've painted; loving the contrasting foliage colours!

Is the owlbear a bastard because it was born out of wedlock between a  bear and a owl?

Or is it calling the hunters bastards because they are shooting arrows at him?

I must say I really like the background forest here. It gives such a nice setting.
