Thanks! I do so many portraits that are supposed to be very realistic that I occasionally forget that blue makes a nice realistic highlight on black. I appreciate the kind comment!

Thanks very much! That one I did recently just kind of for fun; it's a lot more popular than I would have expected!

Thank you very much! I was a little concerned about making blue highlights when I started this one, but I was pleased to find that it worked better than I'd expected!

I am really glad you asked, because it's kind of interesting. I've had a lot of watercolour instructors over the years, and every one of them would slap my hand because of the way I paint! I paint backward, particularly with pets. I start out with the darkest areas and move to the lightest, and finish with a light wash. The reason is that it gives fur a fuzzier texture while maintaining the details almost as if they were dry-brush. For this one, I did the darkest blacks first, and fished with the light blues - the light wash at the end helps give it a bit of blend without feathering or seams. When I teach, I always show as many ways of painting as I can. I've even had people tell me it's "wrong", but I think it works, and to my way of thinking, the outcome is more important than following rules.

oh, thats really cool! yeah, ive tried it that way before...i think with a flower or something...and it made it look pretty good...ive never really tried to do pets, though, so i'll have to work onn that......
i remember i ha done art instructor who had us do something like....a watered-down acrylic wash first, then build up with watercolors afer, then darken the areas with more acrylic. it looked pretty cool, actually.....
hey, have you ever experimented w/ watercolors under/over colored pencils?

I've done a couple of acrylic/watercolour paintings, but I've never tried it with coloured pencil. I bet it would look really cool, though. I'll have to give it a go and see what I can come up with!

Basically... I'm stealing your talent and keeping it for myself. Like the first commenter said, if I had tried to do blue highlights, the dog would've looked like it had blue splotches of paint on its black fur. -_-
Consider your talent stolen. >>;

Not me. I've tried and failed miserably. Embarrassingly, actually.

Oh, I doubt it was all that bad - you're so good at so many different media! I bet you could pick up on this kind of thing in a snap.
