Description Between the Father's Day commissions, I worked on this painting of Mesopotamia, a most interesting cat I know. He lives in a reputedly haunted old church way out in the sticks, and is terrified of armadillos. Pepper took a snapshot of him while he was peering through the slats on his porch, looking for armadillos. So I thought it might be fun to paint it.

Aw. I couldn't help faving this because it really reminds me of my deceased cat, right down to the black and white tuxedo markings and the curious 'dude what is that?' posturing

Thanks! Messpot is one of my more popular paintings - I think that's at least in part because he reminds people of a cat they know or knew. The quizzical look you mention is more unusual - he must have been a pretty cool cat. =^_^=

The first thing I thought when I saw this picture was "I wonder what it's looking at". I should have known it was signs of armadillos. I mean, that's SO obvious!

Thanks! I have no doubt that Mess-Pot would be thrilled if you pet him. I don't think I've ever met a more "dog-like" cat.

Mess-pot isn't sad - he's actually a very happy cat. He's looking for armadillos; whenever he gets on the porch where he lives, he very carefully looks between the slats of wood to make sure there aren't any armadillos hiding under the porch.

Thanks! Mess-Pot is a great cat - he fell asleep on me one afternoon while we were house-sitting his church. ^_^ "Mess-Pot" sounds a bit like a Nederlandisch food - I'll have to look it up and see in my snazzy recipe book.

Aww, thanks very much! This cat was triple matted white-black-white in a heavy black frame; it really looks nice on the wall. I enjoy telling the story - this cat is hilarious about armadillos.

Amazing! I like its define fur color, the blue pelt sparkles much comment to me. It looks so amazing! Wow? Armadillos? Well I'd be pretty startled too, if seeing an actual armadillo, I never knew curtain cats are scared of armadillos

Thank you very much! Mess-pot is definitely an interesting cat; he stands at the window and if he sees an armadillo walk by, he lets out a terrifying gurgling howl.

Thank you so much! One thing I try to explain to my students is that if they follow the contours of the fur while they're painting, it's hard to go wrong.
