Description The chippentails are an old relic group recently found on the eastern part of the Northern Continent as well as on a few distant islands. Once a widespread group, it is today being outcompeted by the more adaptive slinches. Chippentails got their name from their characteristic tail fan morphology, where a terminal section of the fan is absent. This feature allows more flexibility of the fan and improves the maneuverability in flight. They are generally colourful and the main land species are found predominantly in the temperate forests. In contrary to the slinches with their wide variety of niches, the chippentails are mostly predators of tentaculopods and small „worm“ clades. Some insular species feed on marine fauna or scavenge from washed-up carcasses. Being mostly solitary, they meet only during mating season with both partners raising the young together.

Just for the pun, makes it stand out among the usually fairly horrible choices.

Considering pneumonopteres hold the niches of both birds and flying insects, there is a crapton of species around.

nice.

though, with such maneuverability, why were they losing out?  (more maneuverable in the air, but not when on the land?)

They are losing out against the slinches because of feeding. Slinches have a very adaptable dentition while chippentails are more restrained in developing new shapes.
