This tutorial goes with my painting "Watchful Twins" ranarh.deviantart.com/art/Watc… . It's all done in Painter with aid of Apophysis7x*, without any blenders.

Hope you enjoy!

*) Here on deviantArt there is a whole group dedicated to Apophysis: Apophysis , and, of course the author of Apophysis 7x, Xyrus-02.

You'll find the whole Tiny Tips Collection, plus some full-grown walkthroughs in my tutorial section . Check out my blog and website for exclusive tutorials, walkthroughs, and tips.

Turned out great! You're welcome, and I'm looking forward to your next piece.

Ooooh, another nebula technique!Β  I love finding new ways of doing things, and your final image is so beautiful Β  Can't wait to try this.

Thanks! The main brush for this was discontinued in the standard range of Painter versions further than 9, but there are plenty others. The new Particle Brushes are awesome. Nebulae are very abstract, so there are many ways that work when painting them.

I'd likely try doing this in GIMP, and see how close I can get.Β  Have you ever used GIMP or Photoshop?Β  Why do you use Painter instead?

Ranarh In reply to Planetrix [2017-10-02 18:10:06 +0000 UTC]

It should work with any softwares. The main points are modulating transparency and size and then to keep adjusting detail by flattening some areas and detailing others - because due to the abstract nature of space imagery, composition becomes the most important issue. Either Apophysis flames or cloud images make nebulae incredibly much easier unless you're actively going for a painterly look.

Painter is a) cheaper than PS but still very powerful, and b) offers fantstic brush options that I've grown used to, that indeed simulate traditional media well. I've never been after a very digital look. Everyone agrees that Painter's Blender tools are awesome, and an amount of Blending can be added to lots of brushes.

Btw, if you're into Open Source software - which is cool - have you tried Krita? It handles MUCH easier than GIMP, and is also free. You can find it on Krita.org; I used it to teach myself animation recently.

Planetrix In reply to Ranarh [2017-10-03 18:42:00 +0000 UTC]

Actually, Krita is a new one to me.Β  I've been using GIMP for years and have kinda gotten used to its quirks, but am always interested in trying other software (especially of the open source variety), so thanks for the tip!

Giving this a shot not for my next piece.Β  If it comes out halfway alright, would you mind if I link it back here?Β  (P.S. I'm using very similar colors for my clouds -- not because I wanted to ape you, but because I wanted to go for a pirates and treasure theme and Caribbean blues and golds were what I had in mind already.)

Ranarh In reply to Planetrix [2017-10-05 16:41:52 +0000 UTC]

By all means link back here, if it turns out okay or not and I didn't patent the colours, so go ahead.
I think Krita is worth it mostly for the resource hunger, and I find the brushes easier to calibrate, too.

Gave Krita a shot last night, and I'm really impressed.Β  I want to move more into drawing and inking portraits, and GIMP has been really frustrating with the brush dynamics.Β  Thank you very much for the recommendation, and I'll post the link back here when I publish the piece -- probably sometime next week

Thank you. I find it very relaxing to create the abstract beauty of space imagery. Have you tried planets?

Breezy-Hope In reply to Ranarh [2016-08-25 03:39:16 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the delayed reply, I don't get on here usually unless I'm gaining inspiration or publishing.
I've made planets, yes. I find getting their atmosphere to be quite tricky without making them look super unnatural xD

Is it possible to do this in Corel Painter 11, too?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ranarh In reply to HyperGirl95 [2012-08-27 16:27:46 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. I think I even did this in Painter 11. All the tools I used are included from version 9 upwards.

Yes, I just upgraded to Painter 12, and I love it!

The tutorial was done in Painter X, though.

Different data formats are in the drop down list you find under "save as...".
PNG format is only supported in Painter 12.

Looks great, maybe I'm gonna try something like this.
Just doodling something and look for forms or structures I could put more detail in :3

Yes, it is supposed to be a good way of starting a painting. Frankly, I don't do so well with it myself, I even had a thorough idea for this one first.
Thank you for the compliment!
