BMW's electric strategy begins with a two-pronged assault on the emerging sector - the economy focussed i3 and this, the i8 electric-hybrid sportscar. Coupling a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine to an electric motor, the i8 can manage the 0-60mph sprint in 4.4 seconds, but will also handle over 20 miles of driving on electric power alone, if driven a little more sedately. The hybrid supercar segment is still emerging, but with cars lining up to take their place in it from this relatively 'budget' offering to the likes of the Porsche 918 and McLaren P1, it looks like this will be a much more common sort of offering in the future.
