On a very, very, very basic level with the line in the middle, and striped sleeves you can see it.
BUT!
I think if you like it as is, it is your character. You can do it as you want.
I do believe that though if people say stuff, they aren't always being mean but trying to help. I mean I got used to it, I drew her a lot to get her this close. Her design itself is good it may be the color scheme.
