Okay, I had a picture in my head I had to get out. Has anyone played the Quest for Glory series? Quest for Glory 4, Shadows of Darkness? Anyone? Its one of my favorite older PC games from my childhood. The pathos of the game still gets to me, and there are at least three minor characters that still break my heart. Old man Nikolai, Tanya and Toby, and the Rusalka in the lake. The Rusalka is the spirit of drowned maiden who lures men into the water and drowns them as well. Every time your character gets close to the lake she surfaces and tells you how cold she is, and asks you to warm her up.
I love that you have this beautiful female character and the only way to establish any kind of relationship with her is to offer her flowers instead of taking advantage of her. Then you can learn from her, and even help her remember who she is and why she became a rusalka. I won't spoil it just in case someone wants to play it (I think it's on Abandonia) and I highly recommend it. I think she just has this beautiful little story arc though.
I also did a master copy of a portion of John William Waterhouse's "Hylas and the Water Nymphs" and this composition turned out to be very similar.
I'll be going back to Dragon Age art soon, I just needed to finish this while it was fresh in my mind. It ended up being a two page spread! Getting work like this done while my little girl is my primary concern is tough. So this was my mini goal for the week. Post on DeviantArt! I hope you like it.
EDIT: I've been informed by several commenters that all five Quest for Glory games are for sale at Good Old Games for a measly ten bucks! Totally worth it, and because you can solve puzzles differently depending on whether you're a thief/wizard/fighter/paladin they have tons of replay value. The sadness of the Ursula always got to me, and yet you can befriend her, and this captures that sweet friendship between the two. And how he was her salvation.

There are too many wonderful and heartbreaking story lines in that game. I would love to illustrate the whole thing!!
I just love the sensitivity of the relationships, and the Rusalka is no exception. I think I especially since it's so common for video games to exploit female characters to sell their games with sex. It's refreshing to have such a provocative character be a lesson in kindness instead.

And the Katrina romance, powerful woman and yet so raw and emotional. Deep down all she wants is someone to love her, first it was Tanya and then the hero.

Oh thank you so much! I would absolutely consider selling the original (I don't know for how much??) but unfortunately it's actually a two page spread in the middle of my sketchbook. I would have to cut it out and get the seams together for the original to be any good. Maybe I could offer it as a print on here for you? I've never sold a print through deviantart, mostly because I do fanart and I don't want to infringe on copyrights. If you don't mind buying it as two separate halves and just framing them together then we can certainly do that.

Ah, OK, that makes sense! I don't know much about how to stitch together two halves and get it to look good, so is there a way to sell a print as a one-off, as a private sale? (I'm still pretty new to deviantart myself).

Quest for Glory has always been one of my favorite game series of all time. It just has this charm that most games just don't have.

Thank you! I always thought it helped that you could create your own character, for starters, and it was really just a charming and fun series. I check the abandonware sites every once in a while to see if I can find anything that even comes close, but so far nothing.

It was definitely one of a kind, and way ahead of its time. I think the King's Quest series is the next closest thing to it,
but none of those games had the RPG or fighting elements to them.

That's true! I think all the Quest series had their own charm. I wasn't really into contemporary settings so Police Quest wasn't on my radar, but Space Quest was great fun too. But it's true, the RPG elements really set it apart even more.

Wow superb art! Yes, I remember the rusalka, it was indeed a sad story. I think this was one of the best games in the series personally, I liked the eastern European backdrop and vampire dark story it had.

It had so much emotion in the story and the characters! Not to mention the soundtrack did a great job of pulling the ambience together quite nicely. Love that game forever!

Actually I thought the story arc between the gate keeper and the shop keeper was comical. It was one of the few lighter parts of the story. I would love to see this game remade. It was pure genius.

Quest for Glory 4 is not my favorite game in the series, but god damn it.... stories in there were just sad and painful. I love them

Awesome work. I always felt bad that I couldn't save her when playing as a non-paladin character. Best I could do was be her friend and give her 3,000 flowers a day to raise my honour to 400 lol.

Oh no! I'm afraid you fell for the oldest trick in the Rusalka book. She's really sweet when you get to know her, you just have to get to know her from a distance.

Oh, I have died in ALL the Legend of Kyrandia games. So many ways. I also spent forever trying to figure out what to do with that rainbow gem that turns into a unicorn statue, only to find out years later that it was an item from something they decided to drop from the game.
My adventure quest need to do something with that object will never be fulfilled.
