Description
The explosive death of a star, caused by the sudden onset of nuclear burning, or an enormously energetic shock wave. One of the most energetic events of the universe, a supernova can temporarily outshine the rest of the galaxy in which it resides. The outer layers of the exploding star are blasted out in a radioactive cloud. This expanding cloud, visible long after the initial explosion fades from view, forms a supernova remnant.Related content
