When commenting on the work of an artist as accomplished as Mr. Lacrosse, it is always wise to speak with a deference to what is obviously a unique and admirable skill, and a list of personal accomplishments that cannot be ignored.

The body of this artist's work, even just what he shows here on DA, is amazing. I strongly encourage one and all to take a long look. Beautiful landscapes of the imagination.

"Machinery of Light" is a subtly rendered vision. The artist works diligently to convey a sense of depth and distance by the extended use of refracted and diffuse light sources. By and large, this is accomplished with rare grace and style, even for a piece the artist admits was completely created in Photoshop.

My sole critique of this work would be that perhaps the artist over-did this in the area of the closer ship. The area where the ship translates into the afterburners firing is so white, so mono-chromatic, that the sense of depth and distance is lost there. To a certain extent, this forces the ship further back into the background than the artist intended, I think. It appears to be much closer to the ship in the distance than it actually is.

As dark as the ship in the distance is, it would seem that there is a lot of room to add color to the foreground ship and still have it fall into the depth scheme of the piece correctly. This takes into account the fact that the engines firing is much brighter, being contained in the small valley where the launch pad rests, and reflects off the sides of the cliffs surrounding it.

Even with that small comment, which was the basis for my deciding to comment on this at all, I still think this is a marvelous little piece. Great detail. Great imagery... great idea. Almost looks like what were once skyscrapers turn out to be rockets, that are now leaving the planet for reasons unknown, but presumed to be dire.

A great piece by a great artist.

"Machinery of Light" is a marvelous example of strong formalism tied to realistic execution. While the subject matter of this painting is something seen often in sci-fi imagery, the artist executes it in a way that pushes it far beyond clichΓ©.

The most striking feature of this illustration is the masterful use of the diagonal to create movement and tension. The vector of the launching spacecrafts is about to puncture the opposing diagonal of the vapor streams in the sky. The sloped ledge on which the foreground figures stand serves to complete the compositional "Z" shape of the clouds and ships, allowing for the eye to make its way through the picture plane over and over. The pointed nose of the spacecraft is echoed ingeniously in the crags in the middle-ground and the leaning mountains in the background. And finally, the dark values in the foreground convey a feeling of heaviness that adds to the "lifting off" sensation of the light valued ships. All in all, this is a wonderfully executed painting.

Est-ce que c'est une photo-manipulation ou est-ce que c'est entièrement dessiné? Si c'est dessiné, les texture sont incroyablement précises. Si c'est une photo-manipulation, chapeau! Elle est vraiment super!
