Description Papuan Bronze Eagle (Harpensis cicirrus)

Wingspan: 2.4-2.8m
Length: 1m
Diet: Cassowaries and occasionally Juvenile Gazekas.
Distribution: Southern New Guinea

The Papuan Bronze Eagle is New Guineas version of the Haast's Eagle, instead hunting the various species of Cassowary that inhabit the savannahs. They are the only representative of the genus Harpensis but belonging to the same sub-family of Harpy Eagles. Like the Haast's Eagle, the Papuan Bronze Eagle has a relatively short wingspan in comparison to its size and attacks prey by diving down on it and impaling it with its sharp talons. They have dark, brown wings, a grey underside with brown markings and their necks have a 'ruff' of feathers which is a bronze colour. Papuan Bronze Eagles nest in the tallest trees in the forest and are occasionally know to eat people.
