Description Barbados Siskin (Carispezia flavastithos)

Antillean Siskins, which despite the name are actually Grosbeaks (Some researchers call them Caribbean Grosbeaks because of this) are small common birds found across the Caribbean islands. The Barbados Siskin is the only endemic species of bird found on Barbados. Before the arrival of the Barbadian Coati, a subspecies of Coati that arrived from South America, taken as pets by the Arawaks, there were many more but not used to large opportunistic predators these went extinct quite quickly. This drab brown bird with a pale yellow face and throat in the males can be found in most habitats on the island feeding on fruits, seeds and nuts but is also commonly found around villages feeding on scraps.

Pygmy Groundpecker (Humupicini erythrus)

Groundpeckers are a family of terrestrial woodpeckers found across the Americas that use their beaks to probe into the soil, leaf litter and rotting wood in search of invertebrates and small animals. The Pygmy Groundpecker is found across the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico and Cuba in a variety of habitats, preferring open areas such as grasslands or forest clearings. As its name suggests it is quite small for a Groundpecker being only 27-35cm long.

Antillean False-Sandpiper (Pseudoactitis actitis)

The Antillean False-Sandpiper is the most southernly species of False-Sandpipers, a group of small sandpiper like waders. They migrate to the Caribbean in the summer to rear their young along the coasts and moult into their striking deep brown and black striped breeding plumage. When they migrate North for the winter they moult back into their dusky grey plumage.

Orange Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola luteus)

The Barbadian subspecies of the Bananaquit has a much more vivid-orange colouration to it and a slightly longer bill.

Barbadian Crested Hummingbird (Orthorhyncus cristatus barbadiensis)

The Barbadian subspecies of the Antillean Crested Hummingbird is slightly larger with a more voluminous fully purple crest to it.
