Because Sam and Danny didn't really have any chemistry in the show, so I was never interested. I get bored easily with cookie cutter "best friend sidekick becomes love interest" tropes. Valerie and Danny had a good dynamic, plus they had a dramatic plot of secretly being each other's enemies. If that had been explored I think it would have been a way better ending.

That's not to say I don't like Sam and Danny. I'll ship just about anything. I read fics with them, but that's because the fanfiction writers can actually do something good with them that the show didn't.

But overall I vastly prefer the possibilities that gray ghost has to offer.

I see what you mean. As painful as it is for extreme DxS fans, SAN and Danny were not developed romantic wise. The show doesn't really tell why the two fell in love. With Danny and Valerie, the reason are strongly implied to where the audience had an idea of the relationship while also leaving room to interpretation. Val and Danny certainly have a complex dynamic and it does open a lot of possibilities for them, especially if they really start getting serious. Val could learn to let go if the grudge and discover that ghosts do feel. Danny had already learned that people are often more than they appear and that sometimes all anyone needs is a second chance. He can give that to Val and quell the hatred in her. Not saying it will be easy. They both can be stubborn as hell
