Description NOTE: Story is outdated

Another lovely charcoal piece? I do believe so! My first war piece to actually have something getting blown up? You bet! The F-24 finally entering gen.2? Yes!

The CF-205 Mk.IV of Russel Woodward flashes by the crippled F-24A of Manny Bishop over Omaha. Woodward scored 6 kills within the 8 minute battle, all the kills against veteran ace pilots from the 65th Aggressor squadron.

Russell "Striker" Woodward, also known as the Monster of the Great Lakes, was the RCAF's leading ace in the NA War; scoring over 110 kills against the USAF. He had taken over as captain of the 494th "Arrowhead" squadron and flight lead of "Colt" flight after the death of his good friend and former Captain William Sanderson. Since Sanderson's death, Woodward's aircraft has bore the the name "Rod From God II", Sanderson's aircraft being named "Rod From God".

Prior to the Day 1 landing, when Canada went into unrestricted warfare against the US (the US was in a state of civil war), the RCAF and the USAF fought over the great lake region. Woodward scored most of his kills within the two month battle, gaining the title "Monster of the Great Lakes".

On May 3rd, 2034, Cpt.Woodward took off from Offutt AFB (captured by the Nationalist a month prior) in Nebraska with his wing-man Lt.Josh Ferguson, on a path finder mission aimed at ammo reserves California. Shortly after take off, Ferguson's left engine failed, and he was forced to return to base. Woodward carried on regardless.

A few miles west of the Utah/Nevada border, Woodward made radar contact with a patrol of six USAF F-24A's. The F-24A's were from Ivan flight of the 65th aggressors, lead by the highest scoring American ace in the war, Manny "Nightdog" Bishop. Luckily, Woodward's CF-205 was loaded with an ECM package, making him almost invisible on enemy radar.

Both the F-24 and the CF-205 are interceptors, designed for high speed, high altitude hit and run attacks on enemy formations. In comparison, the F-24 is a lighter and more maneuverable aircraft, but it is almost 1000 km/h slower (CF-205 max speed mach 6.6, F-24 Mach 5.2) then the CF-205 and has significantly worse acceleration.

Woodward climbed from his cruise altitude of 75, 000 feet to 90, 000 feet, and waited until the F-24's were below him, and dove in. Using a combination of guns and missiles, he killed 3 of the 6 F-24's in a single sweep. He then leveled out and accelerated around in a 360+, 13g turn, fixing himself behind a 4th F-24, using the last of his missiles to kill it.

Having lost sight of the other two F-24's, Woodward entered a standard turn and dive defensive maneuver, trying to get an eye on the remaining F-24's. Suddenly, a missile warning went off, and he sent his plane into a deeper 75 degree dive while deploying a burst of EMP countermeasures, disabling the missiles. He then pulled up hard, putting another 13g's of strain on him and his aircraft, cut the CF-205's engines, putting the wingman of Bishop square in front of his CF-205's 27mm gun. With a quick burst, he had his 5th kill of the day.

All that remained between him and home was Bishop...

Woodward looked to his left side, and saw Bishop only a few feet away. They both continued to climb at near vertical. The pilots were both ignoring any training, and putting faith in their aircraft. Whoever stalled first would lose. At 90, 000 feet, Bishops engine cut out, and his aircraft fell like a rock. Woodward slowly nosed his struggling aircraft around and let out a burst of 27mm shells. They hit, leaving the F-24 with a trail of fire and smoke. Woodward began following the doomed aircraft as it plummeted towards the plains below. Bishop managed to extinguish the fire, but soon discovered he had lost too much fuel to return home. He bailed, and Woodward broke off, continuing on his mission. It would be his last air to air combat either ace would see before the end of the war.

Might have to get back into Forgotten Aces I keed, I keed.

6 kills in 8 minutes against a squadron of aces is pushing it a bit, LIKE the way you've played it out, it's a LOT of fun

Considering how much better a CF-205MK.IV is vs the F-24A, it is more believable. I imagine that a single F-86 Sabre could do that to a flight of Me-110's

The US has some great aircraft in Red Skies, but the F-35 and F-24A are not on that list F-35 can't maneuver, can't hold much ammunition and has a very low speed. The F-24A is dangerously unreliable, can't maneuver either and costs way too much to produce.

They make up for it later in the Super Diamondback, F-27 and Kestrel later.

These can take two weeks to make. And I'm sorta running low on inspiration as far as aircraft go, and I'm running high on psychological action-drama concepts right now :/

I'll try and think of something

Best air force around!

Well, with the exception of the: USAF, VSS, ALA, RAF, Flygvapnet, Luftwaffe, ROK AF, RAAF...

Okay, it's not exactly badass. BUT, we are second in North America and 4 in the America's, and that's pretty darn good

This is cool, it does feel like something out of Dogfights.

But why is canada fighting the US again, I thought we were allies?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ravajava In reply to mobiusonedt [2012-01-13 17:43:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I actually watched an episode of Dogfights ahead of this for inspiration. I think it was called "Legend of Y-29"...

Long story short (if you want the long story, read Red Skies Season 1 in my gallery) The US is in a state of revolution, the government has gone all autocratic, and Canada is swooping in to make sure the democratic revolutionaries (aka The Nationalists) win. By the time this takes place though, the Nationalists have already taken Washington D.C. and Canada is holding the remainder of the old Government at bay while a peace treaty is worked out.

So its sort of like Modern warfare except you replace russia with teh United States essentially?

Ravajava In reply to mobiusonedt [2012-01-13 17:54:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's one way to look at it. Except the story has a more Bad Company dark humor around it (I never allow the stork to take itself too seriously). It also goes along more like a mix of the War of 1812 and the US War of Independence, if you can wrap your head around that

Yep, I loved those games. Never understood the hate people had for the campaign... Oh well, I guess we liked it

Certainly is. I try to talk to Americans about the concept as much as possible to make the Nationalists actually fight for things Americans find important. Not that I think Canadians and Americans are too different in that regard, but their are a few... particulars.

mobiusonedt In reply to Ravajava [2012-01-13 19:43:54 +0000 UTC]

Bad Company's campaign was pretty good in my book.

I gotta say, coming up with aircraft designs for 20 years into the future must have been a bit difficult how did you do it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ravajava In reply to mobiusonedt [2012-01-13 20:02:25 +0000 UTC]

Funny you ask, I was planning on making a youtube video on how I created a few of my jets. What I usually do thought is pick and match sections from my favourite jets dating back as far as the 50's and throw them together. Then I finalize it with a futuristic twist. So, the CF-205 is a mix of the F-101 Voodoo, the F-4 Phantom and the CF-105 Arrow. Then I look at some 5th and 6th gen jets (The F-22 and F-XX are usually the two I go to) to give it the futuristic finish, and voila! A jet that looks like it could be 20 years in the future!

It usually takes 2-4 hours to come up with an original design. Once I have the design created, I can usually recreate it from different angles at ease in an hour or two.

Question about the storyline: Why is Canada at war with the U.S. in your story?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ravajava In reply to DBsTreasure [2012-01-12 05:56:40 +0000 UTC]

So, long story short. UK went through a Nationalist movement, which in a single election totally changed the government and the path of the nation. About 6 years later, the same movement made its way to North America. In Canada, it went down the same way. One election totally changed the country's government. In the US though, there system was more corrupt and the country fell into a Civil War. Canada, wanting the revolutionaries to win, came to there aid. There is also a lot of stuff to do with resources, water, imperialism and militarism, but I would be hear for a while describing that...

I invite you to read Cavalier and get into it yourself
