I practice shamanism, and work quite intensively with the animal spirits both of my ancestors homeland (Russia) and with the animals native to the place I grew up (Australia). It just seems natural to me.

Thank you. That one usually gets pinned up on my wall, though more because I like red kangaroos. They're big!

But what about the Grey ones?

Ravenari In reply to Dagger-cat [2006-06-03 01:26:31 +0000 UTC]

I like grey ones, but not so much. Actually my 'favourite' in the family Macropodidae is the Western Brush Wallaby, firstly because they're endangered, and secondly because I see them frequently not ten minutes from my house when I go bushwalking. They have markings akin to war-paint on their faces, very distinct.

Grey kangaroos are great, and they tend to teach us (forgive me, I'm a totemist, I think all animals teach us) about family and cooperation. They tend to be found among the more wooded areas, and they're much smaller than the Red kangaroo. The Red kangaroo adapted to the harsh inner deserts, and grew to giant heights. Before the introduction of native animals, it was the largest animal in Australia. Now, because of introductions - I believe it is the 13th largest!

Australia and introduced animals seem to get along just fine. *rolls eyes*

Eh, England's native animals and introduced species get on just as well. *eyeroll*

Those Western Brush Wallabies--I'd heard of the species before but didn't know much about them, so looked them up--look awesome. I can see what you mean about their facial markings. It's a shame about their decline though. It seems that the smaller species are always the first to take the brunt of it. :/

Heh heh, I know of quite a few totemists so I'm familiar with that idea; another person I had spoken to viewed them in a slighly different way, but I forget. I'm not a totemist myself but believe myself to have an animal totem (Red Fox), but I view him as more of a being born out of my psyche than anything and doesn't have any traditional totem characteristics, I don't think.

Red Kangaroos are amazing. Although, unfortunately I haven't been able to see any up close. The limited variation of species they have in English zoos prevents that somewhat.

I don't like working too much with 'traditional' perspectives, and tend to branch out working with the totems of rare animals, which spawned the LiveJournal project: [link] I also like the idea that an animal can teach you anything it needs/wants to, and that it usually doesn't conform to catch words like 'family' or 'joy' etc. Especially if you're going deeper into your relationship with them.

You'll have to come to Australia one of these days, I'll take you to see all of them. *grins*

Hey, I've seen you around before! On Animal Quills, although I haven't introduced myself there yet as I nothing to currently add. I'm here: [link] I'll have to friend totems of the week, it looks really interesting and your views are different from others I've seen.

I'd love to visit Australia. I just need the money to get me there.

I feel the same way about trying to afford Russia / Japan and all the other places I want to visit! I only joined Animal Quills recently as a community, it doesn't seem to be used much though, which is a shame.

Russia... Japan... Cambodia... Alaska... Australia... New Zealand... China... everywhere.

Yeah, it is. I think its because most people have their own websites to put their personal essays on and others, like me, are more interested in reading about others experiences than writing about their own.
