Wait... that's a wasp? And you're holding it in your hand? 0_0

Oh yes. See, mud wasps are a lot more docile than their wood-chewing counterparts. They don't necessarily like being messed with and they can sting, but they usually don't. In fact, I've never been stung by a mud wasp, but I've been stung by too many paper wasps to count. One stung me just for rescuing it from my swimming pool. How's that for gratitude!

That's one thing I've never been able to find. I've only seen one wild scorpion, and it was about 20 years ago in Nevada.
God, that makes me feel old...

A black light? Nope, I don't have one of those...
Hmm... this comment chain has gotten pretty long. Maybe I should put a shoutbox on my homepage.

I don't know. The insect kingdom is a harsh world. The deformed or weak oftentimes don't survive.

D: harsh sad truth, hope it survives at least
while looking at your images, it made me think of this question: is it possible to get insects to trust you like with many other animals?

I'm... not sure. Their intelligence is mostly limited to survival/reproduction, so there's not a whole lot of room in their brains for much else. It's possible to keep some as pets (the longer-lived ones, anyway), but I don't think they'd ever be as friendly or trusting as a small mammal.

well if anything, they can probably figure it out eventually if you kept getting near them at spots where they live and didnt bother them. thats my idea.
its a bad comparison probably but with things like birds around where people eat. being near people basically all the time makes them not as scared of us and they just move out of the way if you are walking in their direction. if this can work with insects, that would be kinda epic.
