Description Just another quick sketch I liked enough to color and post up. Emphasis on the word quick, as you can see from the fact that some characters have more cartoony proportions than others. (some even have fingers while others don't, lol)

This is the Heroes Guild of America, a team of superheroes that existed in the 1940's, in the fictional universe of my "U.S. Honor Guard" characters. The Guild is like the JSA to the Honor Guard's JLA.

Keeping the spirit of the 1940's, or "Golden Age" of comics in mind, you'll notice these guys have lots of capes and underwear on the outside of their pants. Something generally frowned upon in more modern fare. (Though I don't get why people don't like capes anymore. Yeah, I saw the Incredibles, and I liked the movie, but all that getting caught in plane turbines and stuff is bullshit. Superheroes ain't supposed to be that stupid. They're SUPERHEROES.)

That said, let me introduce you to the characters. From left to right...

The Stranger:
Inspirations: Hourman (DC), Hooded Justice (Watchmen)

Powers: Invisibility, Teleportation, Phasing (walks through walls)

Notes: I like how he has the space for a logo, but no logo. Fits his name, I think.

The Mariner:
Inspirations: Aquaman (DC), Namor (Marvel)

Powers: Strength, Speed, Durability, & eyes accustomed to darkness (powers necessary to live deep underwater), The ability to mimic the natural abilities of any sea life (fish gills, an eel's bioelectricity, a dolphin's echolocation, an urchin's spikes, the suckers on squid tentacles, etc.), and a telepathic power that makes people temporarily insane, due to his Lovecraftian origin story.

Notes: I don't know why he's standing in a bucket. He doesn't NEED the water. It's just funny.

Doctor Shadow:
Inspirations: The Question (DC), a li'l bit Batman (DC), a li'l bit Dr. Mid-Nite (DC)

Powers: Medical degree, detective skills, gadgetry (primarily night-vision goggles the size of a pair of sunglasses and a tranq-dart gun)

Notes: This is the same guy that's in the Honor Guard. His backstory involves dying in the 50's and coming back to life in the present day.

Solar Man:
Inspirations: Superman (DC), The Sentry (Marvel), Bruce Campbell

Powers: Solar-powered Super-Strength/Durability and Flight, as well as Photokinesis, the ability to control light.

Notes: My eariler drawing of Solar Man depicts what his costume would look like if he lived in or time traveled to the modern age, where solar panels could be sewn into a supersuit. Here's his traditional duds.

Ultrawoman:
Inspirations: Black Canary (DC), Superwoman (the evil alternate version of Wonder Woman from the evil Anti-Matter universe) (DC)

Powers: The last of the ancient Mayans, UW was a high-priestess who, when the Spanish started wiping her people out, was gifted the power to "survive" by her gods. So she's got eternal youth on top of the more superhero-y powers of strength, speed, flight, and the ability to produce lightning and thunder from her hands.

Paragon:
Inspirations: Green Lantern Alan Scott (DC), Captain Marvel/Shazam (DC), a li'l bit of Raiden (Mortal Kombat)

Powers: His magic gauntlets grant him the powers of strength and flight. On top of that, the gems in them change color based on his emotional state like a mood ring, and each color grants him one additional power at a time based on energy manipulation, from beams to forcefields to boosting or depowering the powers of others.

Notes: Unlike Dr. Shadow, Paragon is a legacy character, this one died of old age and my other drawing is his successor, who became the new Paragon in the present day. Here, you can clearly see the inspirations and evolution of the modern Paragon's costume.

Tarantula:
Inspirations: Spider-Man (Marvel), Bucky Barnes (Marvel), Robin (DC)

Powers: Sticks to walls, has a venomous bite.

Notes: Every team from the old days had a sidekick or mascot, so here's the arachnid kid, the Guild's "junior member". I like that he's making a smiley face through the mask.  His whole character is deliberately-corny and comic-booky.

Awesome super heroes.

But what is their team name? Avengers? Justice League?

I never really settled on a final name, but I like how the Justice League and Justice Society have similar names so I was thinking since the present-day characters in my universe have a team called the "Honor Guard", the older characters' team name would be something similar-sounding like "Heroes' Guild".

why exactly would someone need both teleportation AND phasing? I'm kind of unsure. Someone fill me in?

The point is that he has complete control over his molecules. He can space them out to pass through things, or he can completely disassemble them and reassemble them somewhere else.

I suppose if he thought about it he could do the opposite to phasing and make himself denser too...

gold doesn't rust, but generally I like the golden age more than the modern age heroes you have.

Fine, that's fine! It's also too soft to make armor out of, so let's just say it's an alloy that does rust. How's that strike your fancy, Mr. Science Man?
