The design reminds me of the Sentinels from The Matrix for some reason. I guess it's the "eye" like protrusions you have going. I'm assuming those are laser turrets.

Um, I still don't understand why the thrusters are out on pods? Surely that's a better place for spin habitats?

If you look at the engines, they have variable thrust directors on them. These, coupled with a mount well away from the ship's center of mass, grants a large moment arm for pivoting. The Alaska must keep its bow pointed at its target to maximize both its firepower and its protection, and having the ability to rapidly pivot and maneuver is vital.

I'm guessing because missiles still have to come in from the enemy ship and laser fire might help make a difference, there again wanting as many turrents pointing towards the enemy as possible.
