Description I found myself with some unexpected free time (not that this is actually a good thing, but I made the most of it), and made some more progress with the Alaska.

Modeled with SketchUp. Rendered with Kerkythea.

The design reminds me of the Sentinels from The Matrix for some reason. I guess it's the "eye" like protrusions you have going. I'm assuming those are laser turrets.

Really monstrous laser turrets. You could put a decent sized house inside them.

This is by far one of my favorite warship designs.

Thank you!

Um, I still don't understand why the thrusters are out on pods? Surely that's a better place for spin habitats?

Still, loving your work, as always.

Cheers!

If you look at the engines, they have variable thrust directors on them. These, coupled with a mount well away from the ship's center of mass, grants a large moment arm for pivoting. The Alaska must keep its bow pointed at its target to maximize both its firepower and its protection, and having the ability to rapidly pivot and maneuver is vital.

*nods* Okay, interesting idea/premise.

Though, given the possible size/mass of the ship, wouldn't 'facing' be rather superfluous compared to the relatively 'open' and random direction of missiles?

Though it would be far more boring, why not just a sphere with armor on the 'front' and the engines tri-spaced about its 'aft'?

Still, as I said it would be very boring compared to your wonderful image.

Cheers!

I'm guessing because missiles still have to come in from the enemy ship and laser fire might help make a difference, there again wanting as many turrents pointing towards the enemy as possible.

*nods* True, true. I do understand that aspect.

So, are the thruster mounts able to be 'swung out'? So that for 'cruising' speed they are tucked in close to the hull to maximize forward motion, then in combat swung out to increase their angular momentum?

"Mr Solles, rig for combat!"

"Aye, sir!"

Cheers!

Vector thrust for helping it rotate over itself, that's some great concept!!
