These ships remind me of the Broadsword-class Mercenary Cruisers from Traveller. They have that rounded front hull with four engine pods extending out from the sides. Also the paint scheme reminds me of Chris Foss' work - his art was featured on the covers of Traveller 4 books: dagonsvault.blogspot.com/2009/…

Chris Foss was definitely an inspiration for these, as well as Peter Elson and to a lesser extent, Angus McKie. I can see the Broadsword influence, but it was an unconscious one. I wanted to break up the sphere shape and add surface area for weapon and sensor mounts and other detail to make it stand out from the destroyer model.

Just quickly went through & favorited most like this --- reminds me of the Lensman series by EE "Doc" Smith, my favorite sci-fi series, & the 2nd of his 2 main series to feature FTL, particle beams, force fields, tractor & pressor beams. His Skylark series was the 1st sci-fi to feature those things --- written in the 1920's, & the 1st 2 & last ships in that series were all round --- the last ship, Skylark of Valeron, was the size of a small planet, with weapons that could destroy planets from half a galaxy away.

E E Smith is an old favorite of mine. I'd say the look of these ships is part STARFIRE game canon, part 70s space art, part my own yearning for something 'realistic' (see all of the radiator panels scattered about, those dark rusty brown sections, and the cruiser's laser turrets look more like giant telescopes than gun tubes).

Yeah, your ships look so much more realistic than any of the covers art on "Doc" Smith's books, through 7 re-prints that I know of. Your laser turrets really reminded me of the Dauntless, with all her Primaries & Secondaries.

Thank you! I've been plugging away at SketchUp for about five years now, and I'm finally thinking I sort of know what I'm doing at this point.

Keep chugging away at it, and look for some good plug-ins to use. www.smustard.com/ is a great place to start. Some are free, most are cheap. A good vector push-pull plug-in is worth it.

I am assuming this is a beauty shot. I doubt they'd get that close to each other for manoeuvres, right?

That's correct. They are in far too close proximity for operations. I set up the render to show off the two classes and their relationship to each other. I even created a 'frigate' variant that I should post at some point, even though it's not part of the original commission.
