Description The destruction of the Ko-Dan command ship under Kril marked the beginning of a very dangerous time for the Star League. Xur had escaped in defeat but had not given up his mad dreams of dominion, the Frontier was no longer the barrier to invasion it had been for thousands of years, and the Ko-Dan would almost certainly want revenge for the annihilation of their forces by an upstart Starfighter. To defend itself and the thousands of worlds within the League, bold action had to be taken, and many decisions previously thought unthinkable were no longer beyond the pale. For one thing, the Star League needed Starfighters more than ever, and the highest of standards under the old Excalibur Tests had to be rolled back to a more practical degree. This meant that non-member worlds such as Earth were no longer off limits to recruitment (Alex Rogan, the new head of the Starfighter Legion, had put paid to that.) The Gunstar in its advanced configuration as flown by Rogan and Grig became the new standard, and was upgraded even further to the very limits of Rylan technology. Finally, Starfighter bases began to pop up throughout the Star League, each capable of maintaining squadrons of 10 to 12 Gunstars (though in reality, 5 to 7 were all that were available to most of these.)

This Starfighter Base is located on a double planet system coreward of the Ko-Dan incursion near Rylos. The Gunstars based here have only just arrived, and still bear the Rylos Sector designator on their hulls, indicating that this may be a temporary deployment.

Modeled with Trimble Sketchup. Rendered with Kerkythea. Gunstar original design by Ron Cobb.

How time flies: people at home can now render 80s-style CG on their own personal computer that is as good as and better than what took a roomful of cabinet-sized computers and a budgets in the millions back in the day.

No kidding! This image is about 2.3 million polygons and it rendered 70 passes in about 8 hours with multiple light sources and most of the materials having some level of reflectivity. But if those guys hadn't taken the plunge, would we have this capacity today?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I totes appreciate their work back in the day. It sure dazzled my eyes when I saw Last Starfight and TRON for the first time. And indeed LS was the first time an effort was made to render CG as "hyper-realistic". I will always enjoy a wonder at measurable progress.
Forward! O, Pioneers!

Someone really need to remaster the originals film's 3d scenes. Although I would LOVE to see a sequel.

I dunno how likely a sequel will be. The rights to any sequels reverted back to the original writer, and what little I've heard is that he is driving too hard a bargain for our risk-averse studios to bite on.

Damm that's a shame. Compared to many "Sci-fi" crapfest nowadays (*cough*Jupiterascending*cough*) these was a really good movie.

Eh, we've got The Expanse. Never thought we'd see a hard sci fi show on TV.

It looks good. Newtonian physics, no magic gravity control. I have to take some issue with 'stealthy' spacecraft, though.

Actually...was thinking of selling it off to the Kodan. I mean, aside from giving Xur a command position, never really saw anything particularly evil about them. That they gave that childish idiot what they did makes me think they'd be more happier dolling out a mountain of cash, a smaller lump and a mansion on one of their better worlds, for tons of tech in a starfighter shape.

I'm that kind of bastard...

One of my favorite 3D CG science fiction movies from the 1980s.  Excellent job and thank you for the trip down memory lane.
