Description Salisbury (England), August 2017

Even without the mention of place above, it would be difficult to imagine such a scene taking place anywhere else than in England : red brick, roofs of slate and tile, a stone chapel, vibrant greens and a circle of friends whiling away the day in the grass... Welcome to the old cathedral town of Salisbury, in Wiltshire !

This should really be a picture of carefree leisure and idleness, a reminder of the mellow atmosphere of summer, yet it seems to have turned into something else altogether (or so I think). To start with, the sky was fairly overcast that day, so that the light was rather flat, putting paid to hopes for a sunny photograph. Then, sometime during post-production, I increased the contrast to the point that the shadows among the trees became rather prominent -- with "harder" colours, the whole scene had taken on a darker, vaguely oppressive quality. Not quite sure where it led me, I cropped the picture a bit more to focus on the circle of young people and their immediate surroundings (this was originally a wider, bird's eye view of the area around the cathedral)... and there you have it : an undefinable sense of threat as the shadows grow and the myriad eyes of the houses spy on the group of friends left alone.

I love this image. The greens of the grass and trees really provide the perfect frame for the sharp reds and whites of the village buildings to come through. That and viewing this piece from 2019 and knowing about Salisbury incident gives this quiet scene an air of terror laid over like a thin film.

Many thanks for the kind words. Your comment on the atmosphere is very close to what I feel as well. And Russian spies in English cathedral (or university) towns are nothing new, after all !

Nice looking village.  How did you get the altitude?  From a cathedral tower perhaps?  After all that walking/flying around I'm thirsty and looking for the pub!

Right on the mark ! The picture was indeed taken from the tower of Salisbury Cathedral. The area around the cathedral is known as the Close and was originally owned by the Church. This might explain why, if I remember correctly, there is no pub as such in the Close, only more dainty tea-rooms. But you still shouldn't have to walk far to find the profane pleasures of a public house...

I've recently discovered that I enjoy an occasional cup of Earl Grey tea, with a splash of bourbon in it.  I wonder if they serve it there?

Earl Grey shouldn't be a problem, but you might have to be a regular to get the additional splash of bourbon !
