Description iPad painting of Hermione Granger, in her Yule Ball dress

So I was trying to think of a person to doodle in my new style here, and I decided on Hermione (and I just LOVE her dress to pieces). I was a bit confused as to why, even with the ginormous Harry Potter fanbase, there hadn't been a realism digital painting of Hermione in her movie dress.

And then I tried to paint it ._______.

After three-ish tries, I kinda gave up. So you're stuck with this. Sorry for butchering it?

Feedback would still be awesome...

EDIT: I haven't had much time since high school started, so I only edited the eye. Still, I think it's a lot less dark and beady and no ref! (even if it makes her look like Marion Cotillard..)

Thanks! I used Procreate. Basically I scan a rough traditional sketch into there, set it to multiply, and push pixels around with my fingers~

It looks pretty wonderful, as for critique I'd suggest you have another go at her eyes- the shadows and highlights are a bit off- her eyes are shiny but strangely. Anyway, the highlights on her dress and skin are beautiful.

I think I will try repainting the eyes - I don't have enough time to do another big(ish) thing like this right now, so I'll stick to that .____. Or maybe the whole face.. Thanks! (for the fave too )

realist-n In reply to vedisdragon [2012-08-24 22:54:37 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks It's called Procreate. Probably the only thing I could ever use - very simple interface. There are like 5 buttons I have a clunky old first generation iPad, so the canvas only gets this big for me. I heard it's HUGE on the new retina display though

realist-n In reply to vedisdragon [2012-08-24 23:54:10 +0000 UTC]

Some of it, yes. I do use a homemade stylus for things like lineart and small details, but I do a lot of the actual painting (especially skin) with my fingers. It's too easy to drop a stylus and spend the next 20 minutes searching for it when you're all snuggled up in a giant comforter :3

vedisdragon In reply to realist-n [2012-08-25 00:00:31 +0000 UTC]

XD Heaven knows we've all done that before.
Keep up the good work!

Tip: if you dont wanna buy an actual stylus, but want a better one, buy just the pen nibs and stick them in broken pencils or something. xD

Very lovely work!

I have always wanted to see a nice painted version of Hermione in her Yule Ball dress! c:

I especially love the folds and shading on the dress.

A bit of critique might be that something seems a bit off with the eyes (placement perhaps?) and the jaw/chinline seems maybe a tad too big (like her chin being too long. Look at the gap between the mouth and bottom of chin). But seriously, you did a very good job, and I instantly recognized it was Hermione even before I clicked on it.

And looking through your gallery, you're making huge leaps in progress.

Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing more from you.

ah i love it! you did amazingly well with her dress, and her hands! hands are so difficult! overall you did a great job. i saw someone else made this critique; her eyes do look a bit off but as you said you are transitioning from anime eyes so thats completely understandable! you're very talented

I worked on it sporadically for four days (which is why the top and bottom parts of the dress are different shades of pink :c) so about 8 hours D: It probably should've taken me half as long, but I redrew the dress a bunch of times. Thanks so much for the fave!

no problem you did this in photoshop right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

realist-n In reply to Devash89 [2012-08-24 05:40:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I didn't. I've actually only been drawing for a few months now, so I haven't invested in Photoshop yet. I did this on an iPad painting app called Procreate that I bought a while ago for 1.99 before I sat down and got serious about drawing It doesn't have anywhere near the long list of functions that Photoshop does (no image editing, no contrast changing make-it-look-freaking-amazing-filters, only one useful blending mode, etc.), but then again all I actually use are the hard brush, eraser, smudging tool, and layers. Considering what I can do with it and the price, I like to consider it the deal of the century

Besides, I wouldn't have any clue what to do with Photoshop. I tried the trial and got nowhere :I Waaay too many buttons. And I don't even have a drawing tablet..
