Description: Bulbasaur are reptilian pokémon, not unlike monitor lizards. They are born from eggs in nests ranging from five to twelve eggs. During the time the eggs are still in the mother's body, the plant on her back releases seeds which will be enclosed in the egg, together with the embryo. In the egg, the plant attaches itself to the Bulbasaurs back. The plant gives the young Bulbasaur nutrients that are essential for the lizards growth. In exchange, the Bulba-plant (so named by professor S. Oak) gets nutrients from Bulbasaurs blood that the pokémon doesn't use himself. Also, the plant is in no danger of being eaten and it gets plenty of sunlight, because Bulbasaur always move with the sun, trying to catch as much light for sunbathing as possible. There are some cases known of plants attaching in the wrong place, such as the head or a leg. These freaks of nature rarely live longer than a few days. There are many theories about how this symbiosis came to be. One of these, is that the Bulba-plants originally gathered their nutrients form the shells of Bulbasaur eggs, and gradually penetrated the eggs with their roots, attaching themselves to the embryo within. Some scientists claim that the Bulba-plant shows animalistic characteristics, such as movement, and that it actively influences the Bulbasaur's behavior, essentially eliminating the theory that the two are seperate organisms. Very little evidence has been found to support this theory. The two triangular pieces of skin on Bulbasaurs head, that have been mistaken for ears in earlier times, are in fact meant to regulate it's body temperature by letting blood flow through it if it needs to lose heat. When this happens, the flaps become bright red. The Bulbasaur also do this when warning others of it's species that predators are near. When it's asleep, it presses it's head against it's body. This makes the skin of it's neck stand out, making it look like Bulbasaur has an extremely large head. This behaviour is the reason Bulbasaur is usually portraid with an exceptionally large head. The plant on it's back makes it very heavy. It cannot run fast and uses camouflage to protect itself from predators. If it is discovered anyway, it shows it's dark blue spots and the bright red inside of it's mouth to indicate it is poisonous. The poison, which is, by the way, quite weak, is made by the Bulba-plant and has a paralyzing effect. It can kill small pokémon, but larger predators, like Fearow, do not fear it. These bird pokémon have learned to use their long beaks to stab right through the heart of the plant, through Bulbasaurs spine. The poison is quite harmless to humans, though small children can experience a numb feeling for several hours if the poison gets in their blood. Always consult a physician if this is the case. Bulbasaur and it's evolutions are naturally immune to the poison. Research is being done to see if this immunity can be passed on to other pokémon, for instance to predators by eating small portions of Bulbasaur (without dying, obviously). They have sharp claws and can do quite some damage to an attacker, but they are not agressive at all. Unlike other lizards, Bulbasaur have only a very short tail. There is no good theory as to why this is, though many assume that a long tail would only be a hinderance for such a slow species. Bulbasaurs diet consists mainly of small insects, though they may occassionally eat a Caterpie.

I used to think Bulbasaur was an amphibian, but I remembered the horned toad is a lizard

Lovely design! Your description is also excellent. Did you gather a lot of the specifics from information about monitor lizards or other real animals?

You have it as a lizard/reptile? I always thought of bulbasaurs as amphibeous animals.

many ancient reptiles of the paleozoic and early mesozoic had short, stubby tails, such as the Pareiasauridae. I would think Bulbasaur would be more closely related to this group or other ancient fossil groups than to Lepidosaurs (lizards and snakes). Nice theory on the plant symbiosis.

Interesting concept of a Bulbasaur... I love reptillian/amphibian fusion-like Bulba/Ivysaurs...

I think pokémon are much more interesting if you know/can think of how they 'work'. After all, if you look at a Bulbasaur in the games or anime, you just see a green blob throwing leaves at other blobs. If you look at Bulbasaur and ask yourself: 'now why does that green blob look the way it does?' it suddenly becomes much more interesting (at least, for me, it's much more fun that way). I'm glad you like my work ^^
