Description And once again, I don't really know what's going on in this painting. My best guess is that the Crown Prince of Cranes is hauling away his human bride who looks none too pleased about the situation. I suppose most people wouldn't be to pleased about being forced to marry someone they never met, much more so, someone of another species. But aren't cranes supposed to be lucky or something?? I don't know... I'm not well-versed on folklore. So, who knows - maybe it'll be the best thing that ever happened to her. And when they're old and gray, her crane-husband will remind her what a drama-queen she'd been that fateful day and they'll have a good laugh about it. Any other ideas what this could possibly be about?

On the technical side, I think her face is too close in value to the background behind her. I hope the sky doesn't look really blown-out on this pic - it was looking unnaturally bright when I posted it on my blog... I can't tell - the image is so small...

The drawing and a bit about it is here [link] for those that are interested.

This could be a beauty and the beast type story. Or the cranes could have declared war on the humans for all their cruelties to cranes and other animals, and they've captured the princess and are holding her ransom until the humans agree to be humane. Or the crane could be teaching her a lesson in humility. Or saving her from something and disguising her as his captive.
I like this picture!
Her face is faded slightly into the background, but it goes with her state of being a captive. The sky has a glow to it, but not too much, and the water is shining with a light of its own.

What a strange piece sure it is beautiful but still, rather odd, though, of course, strange pieces are much more interesting. The work on the crane, girl and boat definitely tie directly in with the title, a clear indication of the bizarre event. As for the design, the long flowing hair of the girl blending into the water is great, as is that perfect stride of the Crane, works with the pleasant water and collection of petals. Great work Red Clover, love it.

I like the title. It could either mean, "The Crane's Captive," as in, it's his captive, or "The Crane is Captive."

Another interpretation: a Goddess who had taken a mortal lover, who died (as mortals do); now, as she travels back to her own realm (the Crane is her servant and representative in the mortal world), she meditates on the bittersweet nature of love.... 7@=e

Oh, that seems like a slightly happier take on the story - sad to leave her mortal lover, but happy to be going home... Thanks for sharing your version.

I love the way her hair is floating in the river.
She's the crane princess in human form, and her father is taking her back home because he doesn't want her to marry the human she loves.
He'll have to go on a sort of journey to get her back and win the respect of the crane king.
Also, said human is a farm or peasant boy.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, but each person sees a different set out of those one thousand. It's really cool, and it's what makes caption contests work so well.
You're welcome~

This is a very nice piece and I think that all the colors go well together, wouldnt change a thing. Great detail, you can almost hear the cranes footsteps and the flow of the water against the little boat. And yes Cranes are lucky.
