Description Hey guys!

More Gemini art for you to check out.

This time I am gonna give you guys a peek at the cover for the 2nd issue. Rather than talking about the actual comic story, I am gonna get all art nerd on you, and talk about how I went about creating this cover.

A: This drawing here is the first step. In actual fact, I had drawn a very rough sketch which was very similar to this idea as a possible cover for issue 1. Because I already had the idea, I didn't need to spend much time thumbnailing, so I pretty much drew this straight on the board and sent it to Mr. Faerber to see what he thought. He liked the idea (and so did I), so I took it to the next step.

B: Refining of the pencils. As I am inking this art myself, I don't need to get too tight, but I still want my perspectives to be right at this stage, and I also went in and tweaked the characters to get them looking better. As you can see, I made the characters actually face each other (as you would in a fight), as well as fixed up that crazy ballet leg on Gemini. Once I got the pencils to this stage I was ready to jump into some inks!

C: As you may notice here, I didn't show all of the inks...firstly, because this way you see better detail, and secondly, cause I want to save the complete inks for when I show you the finished piece! I have talked about inks before, but as you can see the idea is to get everything reading really nice n clear and ready for colour...

Check back later in the week and I will post up the finished cover with FCO's colours...and perhaps a little concept art of the angry fellow

Hope you enjoy!!

Jon.

Beautiful stuff. What do you use for sketching and final pencils?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Red-J In reply to vincentkukua [2008-03-08 22:40:27 +0000 UTC]

I use the same pencil for everything. It's basically an H lead standard wooden pencil. (Staedler).

Thanks!

Thanks. I'm working on something and just like to keep my options open on what medium to use and how. So, the roughs and the final pencils are the same lead??? Wow. Amazing.

Red-J In reply to vincentkukua [2008-03-09 03:55:18 +0000 UTC]

haha...yeah, well, it's all the same piece of paper and everything. I just keep going back and adding detail, erasing the old stuff until it looks more or less 'right'.

P.S. when you do a page/cover in 3 stages like this, do you find yourself a bit over the image once you get to the inks? I hear people talking aboutkeeping the pencils loose so they're still feeling engaged when they come to ink. What u think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Red-J In reply to DannyMcGillick [2008-03-08 22:45:00 +0000 UTC]

Hey dude! Cheers!

As far as getting sick of the image, it dosn't really happen because I am laying those pencils down so quickly, and between step 1 and step 2 there is usually a days break so I get a chance to come back to it fresh. The backgrounds can be tedious, especially when I'm inking them, cause your ruling everything twice almost, but the character stuff is always very fun and loose, and I do in fact do a fair bit of the actual drawing while inking.

So, you going to Supanova Sydney? I'm gonna go for sure this year!

Yeah dude I'm all over it! The communications chick from the original star trek is there too hehe

You going to be inking anything at the desk at supanova for Gemini?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Red-J In reply to DannyMcGillick [2008-04-02 02:01:48 +0000 UTC]

possibly....I'll most likely take a bunch of pages up to pencil in Brissy, and I'll most likely be inking in Sydney.

Gold dude, especially those inks. The building in the back-right of shot is awesome too, your backgrounds are really something!

Nice one!! (btw, ordered my Gemini today!!)

As for the character designs, did you get some EXACT descriptions or could you add some of your ideas?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Red-J In reply to scoundreldaze [2008-03-08 22:49:48 +0000 UTC]

Hey man!

Glad to hear you ordered it! That's at least 1 copy then

Character designs...Well, in general, Jay will give me a name, gender, age and an idea of the characters powers (if they have any), but from that point it's whatever I come up with. One thing I love about working with Jay is that he really lets me do my thing with the look of the book, so we are both bringing our best out. The only character who isn't 100% my design would be Gemini. We went through at least 20 different designs (I think) until we ended up with the one we got now. Erik Larsen helped us out with that.

scoundreldaze In reply to Red-J [2008-03-08 23:40:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's cool!!!
When I worked on my comic, I had the same luck to be allowed come up myself with the visuals for the characters; it's GREAT to have that freedom!! ...but then again, I wouldn't mind neither having a big gun like Erik Larsen "helping me out"...!
Anyway, looking forward to the book!! ...and then finally I'll have some more material to do some Fanart...!

ItΒ΄s so great to see you progress of drawing. ItΒ΄s nice to see how the picture grows. The second guy reminds at wolverine but in a very mad version, thats cool. What I really like about this one is the background. The two houses in the bg are like symbols for the tow figthing guys in the forground. This way the motiv of one vs. one could be found in the whole composition. ItΒ΄s just too bad that my comicshop cant import it. The comicscene in germany is soooo small. Sorry for my awful english hope you can understand what i tried to say.
