Description A reformed space pirate, whose main goal in the series was to get the man of her dreams, Tenchi...Yep it's one of those animes, so shut the hell up about shipping

Here's a pic of her currently having some downtime, resting from the trials of the day with her feet up...

From the 'Tenchi Muyo' franchise.

I think you showed me this pic a while ago? It doesn't feel new to me.

Ryoko's an interesting one. She's my favourite girl from the series but not one that comes to mind for the kind of subjects we use dA for. I guess maybe it's because I saw this show when I was much younger?

Red2870 In reply to Veroom [2014-11-23 21:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Had to finish it sometime

Considering the variety of subjects that are drawn on DA, I consider the character not questionable to use, just under used. Nice to meet another toonami fan of the day!

Veroom In reply to Red2870 [2014-11-23 21:05:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh definitely. I still prefer seeing her to an unknown character any time, and you're right the girls from that series are absolutely not drawn enough.

Not sure it was called Toonami over here, but honestly I can't remember. I know I've heard Toonami before but only from another dA user talking about it.

Well, I'm glad you like the pic despite the time it takes for me to draw them.

Have you seen the new tenchi muyo series by the way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Veroom In reply to Red2870 [2014-11-23 21:10:57 +0000 UTC]

New as in the third series that is about 10 years old, or new as in the second spinoff about his half-brother and with almost no appearances from the original group? Or is there another more recent new series?

Red2870 In reply to Veroom [2014-11-23 21:14:39 +0000 UTC]

Tenchi muyo AI, I believe, but those new ones are of no interest to me. The current AI is a wasted opportunity...takes place in a high school of all places, guess the premise.

Veroom In reply to Red2870 [2014-11-23 21:21:03 +0000 UTC]

Just looked it up, and what a strange premise. So it's a lot of short episodes and the entire series was sponsored by a city to promote tourism?

I'm going to have to see a few episodes to see if that format works. None of the original girls are on the promotional image I saw, which makes it sound like they'll all only have short guest appearances like they did in GXP. But if they do appear more often it might actually work out quite well.

You know it occurs to me, the original Muyo continuity, did the west ever really find out what happened? The third OVA series didn't really resolve anything since it was mostly a way to set up GXP by introducing Airi and Seto.

Red2870 In reply to Veroom [2014-11-23 23:04:51 +0000 UTC]

Nothing is resolved, it just adds more material. Not one ending for any continuity, just speculation as far as I can determine. In any country

I do have a preference for avoiding endings, hate the idea of an ending in fact, but I know when something is being continued for the pennies

Yeah, watched up to episode 10 since my last comment. It's definitely a spinoff.

It doesn't seem to commit to any of the original Tenchi continuities (OVA, Universe or Tokyo) either since nothing that's exclusive to any of them has appeared so far - not even Kiyone. But then the sword has and that was pretty much an OVA thing.

I thought in Japan there was more known, because the original author had written books and such that had never been translated. The trope "Marry Them All" was originally called The Tenchi Solution because of something in those.

Red2870 In reply to Veroom [2014-11-24 00:34:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well to be fair I think there's a bigger market for anime novels and a lot of other things to boot in Japan.

Tried watching several episodes of Ai and it seems forced, 5 minutes isn't a great idea to sell it, in my opinion at least.

Up to about 17 now, it's a strange series. There seem to be multiple stories happening and sometimes the characters are different ages and such, so maybe the episodes aren't all in order?

There's a desire for novels to be translated here too. The website Baka-Tsuki has done wonders with some translations for instance.

Could be the case or to get some attention.

Only ever read the manga volumes myself, fun and self contained, still no ending. I think the novels go heavily into the universe and characterisation of the main cast, which sounds kind of fun.

Veroom In reply to Red2870 [2014-11-24 00:57:06 +0000 UTC]

Probably. It always felt like the third OVA series and GXP were trying to fit as much of the other additions into the anime as they could, to the point where none of it was covered in enough detail.

Red2870 In reply to Veroom [2014-11-24 01:00:36 +0000 UTC]

That's a fair point and I found it of increasing concern why they insisted of having more of Tenchi's family members hitting on him...seriously I think I'm missing something there.

Veroom In reply to Red2870 [2014-11-24 01:15:56 +0000 UTC]

Even the original OVA series made a point of showing Jurians to be a bit more liberal about family relations with the half-brother stuff, and thinking about the second OVA series, the princess' father is Tenchi's great-grandfather.

But then the series as a whole seems to have doubled back on itself in some aspects when it elaborated more on Jurai and stuff. For example, by the third OVA series the princesses had Masaki as part of their names, yet in the earlier ones they had no clue at first how they were related to Tenchi (just that they were thanks to the sword).

As for Airi, I don't think it was made clear if she's biological family. They said she was a collaborator for his mother's funeral prank so she knew his mother, but there was a real lack of anything suggesting she was her mother or if Yosho had different wives at different times.

But then that's where things get really silly. Tenchi's mother died at the age of 240-something, so she was born after Yosho chose to stay on Earth (700 years ago). Since Airi knew her, Airi went to Earth. In the second series Funaho (Yosho's mother) implies he found a wife from Earth, but Airi is not. And even sillier, where the heck was Ayeka in all of this? Apparently she spent those 700 years in space looking for him while others knew?

Plot holes and problems that will never be addressed in canon. Bit of a bad move, 700 years for nothing in space.

I'm sure some of it makes sense when explained in greater detail, but it does seem like the anime suffers from being some parts simplification (especially early on) and some parts retconning.
