Rather unexpectedly, I discovered through the power of writing out scenes that Pupcat's schooner, Compromise, had a crew member before Adel joined his crew . That member is Deira, an anole lizard raeth who is technically apprenticed to Pupcat. Being a mage, Pupcat is responsible not only for his own life but also his partner's, Isolde's. Deira is the woman they found to receive Isolde should Pupcat kick the bucket off schedule. Isolde's exacting specifications required a raeth for the job, and thus Deira became the only Raethian member of Pupcat's crew.

I don't hold with giving non-mammal anthros boobs these days--I think it's a lot more fun to bend traditional ideas of gender--which plays a role in Craie & Leaf 's love story. But I wanted a woman to highlight the situation, and once I realized Pupcat needed a raeth crew member, Deira immediately sprang to life, fully formed. I'm working on a group image of the crew at the moment, so I wanted to quickly introduce her.
