And I remember Strawberries...

I have long since forgotten her face, so warm and loving. The smell of strawberries brings back childhood memories of her, somewhat bittersweet. I remember when she passed away, my mom came into my room with tears in her eyes and told me she was gone. I didn't completely understand, death was just a word to an 8 year old who had never had to deal with it before. When it finally hit me I ran, ran to those same strawberry fields that had once brought us both so much joy.

I cried as I clutched the last tangible memory I had of her, a stuffed animal meant to bring comfort. I clutched that little blue bird as if it would suddenly come to life and leave me like she had. I promised to never forget her, to always picture her smiling as she said I was like the daughter she never had. Sadly I have broken my promise, all I see are glimpses when I think of her. Like having lost something dear to me in a foggy dream, something subconscious and untangle. Though I don't remember her physically, emotionally she will always have a place in my thoughts.

DEDICATION
To Yoko, who will never be to far away from my heart. To anyone who has lost someone dear to them, may they be in a better place and always remain in our thoughts.

ABOUT THE IMAGE
This is how I picture Yoko must have looked like when she was younger, a beautiful Japanese woman with a kimono celebrating her beloved strawberries. Oh her shoulders are the two birds she gave me before she died, though I didn't draw them as stuffed animals but rather real birds. A green bird for my sister and a Blue bird for me. The kanji in the necklace means Memories/ remembrance.
