Description Meet Goulder, the Gryphive’s very own powerhouse of strength, and the oldest member of the group, at 28 years of age. One may take a glance at his titanic posture, and judge him as a gryphon capable of many physical feats. Though he has the most hardened personality out of all of the Gryphive, he still is a loyal friend and can be gotten on with well.

He was the only child of two parents, father Aodhan and mother Ciara. His life was usual for a gryphon, up to the passage of seven months when he began to go off his mother’s milk and rely on solid foods. One night, after repeated failures to catch enough prey to provide for the family, Aodhan and Ciara got into a bitter fight. Traumatised by seeing his parents hurting each other, and terrified he would be treated the same way now that he was becoming food-reliant, Goulder decided to run away after they had gone to sleep. The young gryphon passed out from exhaustion after journeying as far away as he could in one night, to be found by his reclusive uncle, Eoghan. Goulder’s care under the wings of Eoghan was not overly bright, as his uncle was a stern gryphon who would often explain and exaggerate the realities of life to him, and say that things were not worth shielding from him when he would learn about them at some point anyway. Despite the roughness, Goulder was able to learn how to survive by being taught how to hunt, as well as to fly.

Unfortunately, Eoghan would one day have a near-fatal run-in with gryphon hunters, which he survived, but also suffered from broken wings. Not willing to give up on his mentor, Goulder would hunt prey to keep Eoghan alive as well as himself, and it was this doing that helped Goulder to develop his trademark muscles. Eoghan became increasingly pessimistic, believing it was just delaying the inevitable, but Goulder knew it was better than abandoning him to die. He did all he could for his uncle, until the gryphon hunters returned and succeeded in finishing him off. They captured Goulder as well, intending to make a fortune off his meat, only for Goulder to defeat them and escape. Whilst on the run again, Goulder found company upon meeting Ridgway, Hugo, and Windspeed, and decided to form a group, dubbed the Gryphour. It didn’t take long for Goulder to try and claim leadership, with his “I’m the oldest” mentality telling him he was the leader. After twice almost landing his comrades in certain death, coupled with clashing with Ridgway over leadership and his brashness, Goulder was unanimously ejected from the group. He would later have an epiphany, realising Eoghan’s reality checks weren’t necessarily true, as well as understanding that being the oldest doesn’t equal good leadership. The next time Goulder saw Ridgway again was when he rescued him when nobody else was able, after which he shared his epiphany and apologised for his arrogance. Too grateful to hold onto his resentment, Ridgway forgave Goulder and offered him a permanent place in the now-renamed Gryphive, where he has  been ever since.

Personality-wise, Goulder has inherited a fraction of his uncle’s sternness. He does tend to be steadfast about situations and what he thinks, but he is always within reason if he can help it. To balance that attitude is a love for life and being sociable, especially with Windspeed, whose sense of humour has rubbed off on him somewhat. He gets on well with gryphons and dragons, namely with the Gryphive and Repsilients, however he is shy being in the presence of humans; there was once an instance of him frightening a couple of children just him by looking at them, so he is embarrassed being in public by himself. The snowy wintry season is Goulder’s favourite time of the year, as he enjoys braving the elements thanks to his naturally thick coat.

When not with the Gryphive, Goulder often takes naps in his cool den to conserve his energy for whenever he may need it. He maintains his muscles daily, and he does this by grabbing onto chains and lifting up logs specially cut for him — he is capable of lifting three times his own weight!
