Many people who've watched the Pokémon anime often write off the Orange Archipelago arc as "just some stupid anime filler arc" without ever paying attention to what it's purpose was. Beyond it giving Ash the chance to fight a diet Elite 4 since his evil doppelgänger from the Nightosphere robbed him of the Indigo League victory it also managed to give Ash some much needed growth as it helped him better connect with his Pokémon since the pacing of the Indigo League Arc was kinda wonky. By far though the greatest thing that occurred in its time was Ash finally earning back Charizard's respect as he once again regains loyalty to the boy who saved his life as a Charmander. After battling with a very strong Poliwrath owned by a trainer named Tad, Charizard ends up being trapped in ice from its Ice Beam and Ash has to revive it back to full health.

If it were any other trainer putting up with a Charizard that doesn't give two fucks about listening to them and only cares to either sleep or try to burn them to death he'd either be abandoned or killed. Fortunately Ash is a better person than I, and so much more forgiving! I admire Ash's determination here as he tries desperately to keep Chairzard alive and warm while its flame reignites. No matter how raw Ash's hands get he never abandons Charizard despite what an asshole he's become because he believes that deep down Charizard still has the kind and determined heart he had when he was a Charmander. I know I joked about calling Chairzad a sociopath and all, but really he's more like an angsty rebellious teenager, only with the better means to commit arson. All he needed was his authority figure to show him respect and stop treating him like he's still a baby Charmander.

Watching Charizard finally obey Ash's commands as he rescues Pikachu from Team Rocket's drill is just awesome. A wonderful combo of Pokemon and trainer overcoming their enemies. I also have to give props for Ash's rematch against Tad, finally putting him and his Poliwrath in their place! It is just such a wonderful feeling after having to put up with Charizard's bullshit for so long, and it almost makes up for him costing Ash the Indigo League! As an extra helping of epicness this was the last epsiode to air before the theatrical debut of Pokemon 2000: The Power of One, showing just what an obedient Charizard could do against something like Moltres!

Pokemon is owned by Nintendo, Gamefreak and The Pokemon Company.

I admittedly truly began to like Charizard after this episode; it truly proves how everyone can change for the better.

Thats nonsense, the orange league episodes cant be a filler.

A filler episode means an episode from an anime that didnt based on the manga BUT the whole Pokemon show didnt based on an manga. It based really weak on the games (Pokemon, some characters and the region) but thats not the same realtionship between manga and anime.

I know we have some mangas but they are about the games, not the show.

It's good to see that Ash never turned away from Charizard, no matter how many times it literally burned him.

The dub adding Pokemon World to the battle made it all the more sweet.

I still love that episode; because Charizard earns some respect for Ash, after he was saved by his own trainer from being deep freezed. And he remember back when he was Charmander and traveling together with him.

I have always wondered why Charizard rebelled in the first place. Didn't Ash have like five or six badges when it Charmelion evolved into Charizard?  I know that the show doesn't quite follow the game's logic, but Charizard is typically in the 30's or 40's level wise and that's the fourth badge that allows you to handle level 40 Pokemon.

My theory is that it might have something to do with when he was abused as a charmander

That makes sense, especially when you consider that Charmander was weak and vulnerable. Then Charmander evolved into Charmelion and gained a little power so he tested the boundaries, but once he had evolved into Charizard,  he knew that he became powerful and basically didn't have to answer to anyone.

Badges don't mean anything in the anime. It's more akin to Charmander growing up and entering his rebellious phase.

Plus:

1. Looking at DP revisiting the disobedient Pokémon with Dawn's Piloswine/Mamoswine, there's one thing I felt the Indigo and Orange Island season was missing.  While far from being one the best episodes ever, The Breed Stampede actually did have Dawn trying to mend things with her now disobedient Piloswine whereas we nver saw Ash trying to do anything to encourage Charizard to respect him like buckling down on his Pre-Indigo League training or some kind of friendship training of sort.

2. Probably doesn't help that he told a battle eager Charmeleon to throw the fight or choosing him to begin with since Paras would have no chance to take him down.

So basically the badges in the anime merely serve as trophies and are needed by guys like Gary who use them for the sole purpose of getting girls and bragging about how badass he is....

They serve as trophies and proof you defeated the gym leaders rather than earning a Pokemon's respect and loyalty. Also levels don't really exist in the anime even back in its early years they didn't exist despite some attempts at integrating game mechanics.

Fair enough.  I always wondered why the anime did things differently.

Yeah...I kinda learned that the hard way...

As someone who loves Pokemon, I attempted to figure out what levels the Pokemon were during the time.
Ex. Ash's Froakie being Level 14 (By via Water Pulse) when Bubble Frog first meets Ash and friends. Or even Clemont's (soon to be Bonnie's) Dedenne being Level 20 (By via Nuzzle) because, even though it would be high-leveled then, it would then become weaker to much stronger foes.

More like a dopey doppelganger who stole his victory with the help of a retarded referee and a trio of pitiful parasites.
