"September 21, 1945… that was the night I died."

Honestly, that quote is really the only thing I need to say about this one. Let's keep this one short: this is perhaps one of the most tragic and brutal animated films ever made. And do you want to know the only plausibly funny thing about Grave of the Fireflies? This was double-billed alongside My Neighbor Totoro because the distributor believed THE LATTER FILM needed a better hook to attract audiences... I sincerely hope that man got fired for this decision scaring so many kids...

There’s a very fine line between making kids sad… and TRAUMANTIZING THE FUCK OUT OF THEM! But beyond that, this film is brutally honest about the horrors of war and what it does to people on both sides. After all, war… war never changes. This is the tale of two siblings Seita and Setsuko who try in utter desperation and vain to survive after their mom gets killed during an air raid in the twilight days of World War II. And the extremely sad thing is you know right from the start they're going to fail miserably!

Who would honestly WANT to watch two children suffer in the most unbearable horrors of war imaginable? Or do you want the movie to shame your generation for the suffering your parents/grandparents had to endure? That last thing being what the director said was THE POINT OF THE MOVIE! Never have I had a movie so thoroughly make me feel like complete and utter garbage since When the Wind Blows. And I don't mean it starts off alright and slowly beats you down like that movie… you’re PUNCHED IN YOUR HEART from the very start, and it never lets up! This is one of the few admirable animations I've done where I legitimately question if the product is something you'd even want to watch! I suppose if you feel like crying for the next few days and truly want to see how bad things were back then, then yes, give this a watch, and you'll see how brutal this movie truly is… NO! How tragic and messed up World War II really was for Japan!!

Grave of the Fireflies is owned by Studio Ghibli.

Your review of Grave of the Fireflies is WAY better and accurate than Bennett the Sage's so-called "review".

explains how Bennett the Sage's review of Grave of the Fireflies completely failed.

Why must the fireflies die so soon?

Never seen it, but I assume it ends with them being caught in either Hiroshima or Nagasaki?

My dad thinks Japan wants to start another war and is proud of its past bloodshed.
I will tie him to a chair, make him watch this, and DEMAND he say it again.
...knowing him, he still will, but this is still a great movie.

That reminds me of a man whose grandfather endured captivity in Japan. Several years later, back in England, he saw a radio stamped with MADE IN JAPAN. He threw said radio against a wall, I believe.

He wasn't in any war, he's just a bitter old racist.

I remember watching this for the first time back when I was in high school. I was a mess by the time the ending credits rolled.

I too hope that moron was indeed fired. This was definitely a great movie but NOT. FOR. CHILDREN!

I know I never want to watch it. The only piece of animation I've seen that may be as depressing as this is the anime Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, which actually did balance it out with optimism. You should watch it, btw, the show is one of the few I know of that can handle large-scale tragedy and child characters.

This is still happening in the world. Middle East, Africa.... the children are still suffering.
And the movie was so brilliantly animated, i couldn't sleep for legit 2 days. The feeling still haunts me.
