Show Rugrats
Episode: S3 E24a
Year: 1994
Writer(s): Jonathan Grenburg, Barbara Slade
Wow, how did they do it? How did Rugrats actually make me cry over the loss of a common pill bug? I didn't even feel for the characters in A Bug's Life for fucks sake! But I guess it all boils down to Chuckie. His episodes tend to be the most emotional in the series and he's easily the Rugrat I relate to the most.
True, Melville didn't have much of a personality unlike, say, Spike or Fluffy, and we didn't know him that long at all. But I can tell from Chuckie's reactions and emotions that even for a 2-year old, he really did love that bug as if it was his friend. A pet is probably one of the best friends you can ever have in your life, especially when you really connect with them. It's true animals like goldfish and bugs can be replaced easily, but for those of us who've had to go through the loss of any pet really, it doesn't make it any less sad whatsoever.
I've gone through this roller coaster ride like 5 times in my life and each time, I've been able to push through and move on, knowing that the time I spent with my pets was good. My last dog Dixie had to be put to sleep due to spinal problems! You can only imagine my sorrow, especially when shortly after or before (I forget) a black cat my family had come to know came down with feline leukemia and also had to be put down. A lot of us have been in Chuckie's position before no matter the age, and we've all had to learn that pets come and go, but our memories of them will never truly die so long as we really loved them.
In fact, this episode brings to mind the Family Guy atrocity "Life of Brian". That episode wanted to take you through the death of your own pet and force sympathy on a character that became the bane of the devil's hinny hole years ago! Here, this episode had a pure and simple desire: to show kids and adults alike that while pets eventually die, it's important to treasure and remember them for the good times, and that eventually the pain of loss does go away so you can move on. Chuckie learned a very valuable lesson about life here, and I'm hoping we all did as well.
Rugrats is owned by Nickelodeon, Viacom and Klasky-Csupo.

I lost two pugs this year, both of them reaching their elderly years and having health problems that they couldn't live with any longer. It was sad letting them go, but perhaps a bit of relief that their suffering was over and they will forever be safe in the Heavens with other past pets of ours.

I can relate - i've had a couple of beloved pets who have passed away as well. My cat Nico (a Russian blue) passed away due to kidney failure and it just makes me cry when I think about it.

Technically the other two cats we had either died or ran away.

This episode was written very maturely. (Ironic for a show where the main characters are toddlers.)
