Before Toy Story, among the slew of cartoons that had toys comes to life, the original was Raggedy Ann. With a legacy going back 106 years this beautiful red-haired dolly is still an icon the world over. And though Hasbro has claimed trademark in her and Raggedy Andy, her original stories are well within the Public Domain. Her animated outings I feel don’t get enough attention and fall by the wayside; most people forget she’s the vessel for Annabelle, not A FUCKING PORCELAIN! I just don't even... look, you wanna enjoy The Conjuring franchise? be my guest; but thems are LIES!

Anywho Famous Studios, y'know me and my history with them by now. But there was a time when they did do good work and had a lot of creativity to their work. I won't deny I love a lot of their cartoons even after 1950, but these from the 1940s are easily the superior shorts. Their two ventures with Raggedy Anne in particular, while not accurate to the books like the Fleischer outing in 1941 or the theatrical movie, have charm in their own that knows how to successfully tug at your heartstrings. If there's one thing Famous Studios was good for, it was tear jerking moments.

I get why some people think this and The Enchated Square are Shmaltzy, sappy and overly dramatic but I like them all the same. If anything I find Casper the Friendly Ghost far worse in this regard. From what I understand these two shorts got almost an entire year of production time compared to most of the other shorts and it SHOWS! The cloud effects of this short look absolutely glorious, some of the most stunning and clean of Famous' overall design. While it's nothing to snuff at the stereoptical Fleischers this is an eye popping short all the same.

Take it from someone who's usually inside during the cold seasons, a Lack of warmth, and friendship, and love, and SUNSHINE can make you a very sick man... that's why I joined Crunch Fitness, well, one of the reasons... what little Nancy needs after a long, cold, dark winter is some of that good old Vitamin D! (And if anyone of you sickos makes that joke I'm gonna... so help me...) what Raggedy Anne's friends assume isn't wrong y'know, the sun is probably the greatest doctor in all the universe for our planet. For without his mighty rays and warmth nothing could survive; everyone needs the sun to survive in SOME capacity. Ya can't just live in darkness and cold forever, even in the Arctic! And... well... knowing how that place is turning out... yeah...

Now before I continue, yes, Mr. Cloud is a racist blackface caricature. He's based on actor Stephin Fetchit (real name Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry) (1902-1985) who was billed as "The Laziest Man in the World". The man was the first black actor to earn a million bucks and get a screen credit! And while his roles are looked on today as shameful and embarrassing, some scholars see him as a great embodiment of the trickster archetype, often tricking his white employers into doing his work for him and avoiding abuse. Mr. Cloud is certainly racist, but all the same I found him charming for his brief appearance.

I really like the theme of this short, being that working together to achieve a greater good. Old Man Winter has his time and his place, but the wind moves the cold clouds at the right time to allow Mr. Sun to rejuvenate the world. This was made at a time when concerns over skin cancer and tanning were not an issue, but they never go that far. Only that a good dose of the suns Vitamin D is ceenssary for life. Now sure, you can get Vitamin D elsewhere, but is it really a substitute for sunshine if you're not light sensitive?

The proper use of sentimentality, compassion and empathy can go a very long way in making an effective story. In many ways this short is like a precursor to the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials with that same "warm" feeling. Mr. Zero, old man winter, is not a villainous miser who longs to keep it cold; he's simply bound to keep to a schedule (Melt all the snow!? I still have two weeks to go! Have you no respect for tradition?) I get it. Even so... ya gotta admit Raggedy Ann FLIRTING with Mr. Zero to get him to melt the snow is... I ain't goin' there! Raggedy Ann be playing with FIRE! She stone COLD! She played with the very forces of nature just to help a sick little girl! Proof positive she is one of the MIGHTIEST characters in fiction!

I honesty love that short(along with The Enchanted Square),the song was very beautiful and heart-wrenching at the end. I agree with you, ,this cartoon is absolutely beautiful and The 1940's proved to be Famous Studios at their prime at least until 1950. Can you do a 1001 Animations on Frogland(1922)next,It's one of the earliest pieces of stop-motion ever made.

A fine example of a guy not being a villain he's just doing his job.
