I'm the same way, Rem! I have trouble with humans because they're ever-so-slightly less geometric and I don't understand, haa

Tips, treat the human face like a flat faced short hair wolf with mane. Try rendering it upside down. I imagine the face like a blank doll face and put the pieces in.
you can always ask me for help if you want.

Ahh treating it like a wolfs-head did take away some of the worry about getting the eyes and head-shape right, and trying to start by drawing a doll-shape mady me realize that I for now, might simply have to pay more attention to making precise and clean lines to achieve the "finished look",, it makes absolute sense written out like this, but being actually conscious of the bad and good drawing habits you have, needs clear reminders from time to time
( I'm familiar with animals, so I draw quickly and messy because I know where the lines need to be to make it look good; trying to still draw with a hurry when drawing humans usually needs multiple re-runs to get somewhere decent)
Thank you for the advice!!

You could try drawing different face shapes (e.g. a more rounded face, a face with really defined cheekbones/jawline), and maybe work from there? I don't know, I'm not the best at drawing human faces either.

Oddly I prefer drawing humans, animals with the snouts and such just kills me.
No idea how I managed, but yeah.

Usually that's what you gotta do before you start feeling more confident in trying different styles... trying to study how the face works from photos or more realistic studies helps a little.
Also, I imagine drawing detailed animals is a little easier, since they either have fur or scales or something that you can draw to add texture, and you can't really do that with humans.
Like, I cannot for the life of me add hatching to a human face unless I'm going for an exaggerated manga style.

Aaa, thiss so much.. I feel like I've gotten better with humans lately, but designing human characters or stylizing them is still pretty challenging hggg.
I think the answer is that you should practice drawing realistic humans first. Practice the anatomy how eyes etc. work and how much variety humans faces have, because then you know how much you can exaggerate and what. Those who have that appealing human art style, have practiced those things and therefore can pull of more stylized styles. The quote "you must know the rules before you can break them" fits stylizing rather well.
With canines you've already learnt their anatomy, so stylizing them is much easier!
I started practicing humans by drawing my own face, looking at a mirror and doing stupid expressions because then I could see how my face muscles and skin moves haha. And then I just drew and painted a lot from random references online. Also drawing croquis really helped too. If you can sketch random people in a library or a bus etc. it helps!
Also I hope this comment helps at least a little!

That's probably the best way to do it yea! It makes total sense but it simply feels weird not being able to transfer what you've learned from drawing animals over to humans 1 to 1.
But yeah, I'll have to do some face studies from time to time and just stop worrying about art style for the moment :>

Kipine In reply to Remarin [2017-10-06 19:59:08 +0000 UTC]
Yeahh, it's really weird! I thought about that too like.. I could draw many different animal species, and humans are just animals among others, so where's the problem hhh. But I guess it's because we know so well what humans look like, and when it's even a tiny bit off, you notice it immediately (things like uncanny valley for example) hah.
Yeah! But of course you can try style things at the same time, if it's fun to you and not stressing!

Well you've spent tons of time learning the planes of a wolf face, but maybe a little less time exercising with the planes of a human face?
I get super lazy all the time and just sketch the same face idioms I know, but it always looks better when I take into account the shapes under the form - the triangles of the nose, and under the eyes, the line that comes in under the jawbone from the ear, the curve the lips rest on, the ocular cavities the eyes actually sit inside.
I made this sketch expressly to show someone the above mentioned, and really exaggerated every step, and it ended up being (accidentally) a really accurate likeness. And yet, after seeing that, being the lazy artist I am I still never build the faces up enough. XD
Style trap so easy.

I know this feeling... I was drawing animals for YEARS, before starting to draw humans and it just feels so..unsatisfying to not be able to draw details into a human face without it "falling" into the uncanny valley~

Ik that feel so well
When I first started drawing I could copy peoples faces from photographs really well, but that was a really looong time ago and I don't think it really taught me how faces work
Now, I draw, pretty much, everything from memory
Animals just seem soo much easier for me lmao
